  1. I've been travelling from Hokkaido through Tohoku and it's nice not seeing tourists. Of course some places seem to have less English, like Yamagata where I am now. But I don't feel it's overrun by wild or inconsiderate foreigners 😅. As for restaurants, I'm too intimidated by my lack of Japanese. I don't understand the lining up, or if all the menus are hand written, so I've been eating grocery store and konbini food the whole trip lol. Except for a couple of times I had breakfast at the hotel. Instead of Fuji, I've hiked Asahidake, and Hakkoda. Antadara is next, after an easy trip to Mt Zao

  2. If you like trains, give the Otaru museum a visit. It’s in Hokkaido, hardly any tourists there. It’s accessible by train from Sapporo. It looked like it could use some support as I went there and it was a ghost town but so well kept.

  3. And if you observe kamakura carefully, you will notice there are three stricts:
    1. Poor local people.
    2. Pensions owned by riches.
    3. Overcrowded tourspots.

  4. Great video. I used to live in Kyoto back in the early 90s. As a resident, I always looked down on the tourists -> the Japanese school kids bussed in from other prefectures. Always noisy and littering. NHK never said anything about them then though.

The school I worked for had a contract with the maiko to teach them English. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to go to teach them; only the head teacher was allowed. But I would see them once in a while on the (relatively empty) streets. Knew then though, not to take photos of them.

  5. I lived in Japan for 15 years before moving back to my home country… I'm coming over again next month, but all this news of tourists ruining it for everyone really bums me out. Until people see that I can speak Japanese, I guess they will just assume I'm there as a tourist, and that kinda sucks. Not that I'm trying to prove anything, but for anyone who also lived in Japan during the late 90's and early 2000s, the difference between then and now can be shocking (in terms of tourist traffic and the tension that comes from that)

  6. im glad i caught this video on my recommended list. I love the way your video is laid out and the professionalism. Lemme commit to that growing subscriber count. Hope you're doing well fam!

  7. I’ve “only” been to Japan three times but I never felt any of the places I visited was overrun by tourists. Sure, everybody wants to see the sakura but so are the Japanese. And Kyoto was less touristy than your average western hot spot. In my opinion the Japanese are being a little xenophobic about it…

  8. Nice video. I have lived in Japan for over 10 years. Spent 7 in Tokyo. Would never live there again. The best of Japan is in the three major islands outside of Honshu, the main island. Hokkaido, Shinkoku and especially Kyushu are amazing.

  9. It's interesting you have Kamakura on this list, because in so many other peoples videos you get told "If you want historic Japan and lots of shrines and temples and a nice bamboo forest minus Kyotos crowds, go to Kamakura" So seems too many people already took that advise and swamped another location. I'm staying in Gion on my next trip and I'm worried about the overcrowding and rude tourists ruining it now as we're right on the edge of the area people are banned from, so it's going to make getting around harder.

  10. I climbed Mnt. Fuji in 2023, and as a tourist I did see a lot of tourists, but still paled in comparison to the amount of Japanese people, but I was only there for 2 days. Been to Kyoto twice now and didn't really see a lot of noticeable tourists on either trip, but I didn't go to Gion. I must say that Osaka is still my favorite place in Japan. The Nagoya Science museum was really cool. I know that Mnt. Takao isnt really comparable to Mnt. Fuji, but for an hour outside Tokyo it makes for a pretty epic day trip, up trail 6, down trail 4 to the lift. Its not a hard trail but the August heat was apparent. Arima north of Kobe was a really great onsen town where I felt like the only foreigner. Now I heard about the "trash" situation in Japan as of recent but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say its not only tourists. Some of the places I went had no discernible tourists, beside my self, and there was trash all over still. Now my sample size is very small so I can't say its not tourists as well. Hemeji is another place I would recommend to others as it was a great day trip outside of Osaka. The one thing I can say as a white American tourist, most of the other white tourists I saw, where not American. Easy to tell when your like "Hey hows your trip in Japan going?' and you get blank stares or answers not in English. tldr: Be respectful and mindful of where you are at all times and remember, where all on this rock together.

  11. Been to Okutama and it is very beautiful. Highly recommended. Great video.

Another fantastic scenic spot is the Iya Valley in Shikoku but it's very far off the beaten track.

  12. Great, useful video. Keep it up. Watch your speed of speech and the volume because I had to replay a couple spots to hear you clearly.

  13. I went back to japan this year and was pissed at how touristy places like dotonbori were. I become xenophobic when i come back to japan now. Yeah i wanna be the token foreigner but its also annoying to go to japan and see a bunch of non japanese people instead of japanese

  14. This is a great video dude. I went to Japan last November and am thinking of things to do next time I go, and some of these are great. Particularly Okutama seems interesting. Echoing what others are saying about your low sub count, you're punching way above your level.
