  1. The problem is that they need to incentivize companies to move/create branches to the rural areas to bring in work, not just have them be in the major cities. As soon as you do that, people will move there. Trying to bribe brides and their new husbands to the country with 6k is nice, but just a tiny bandage on a bigger problem. Just moving to a town in the sticks with the real possibility of the town being abandoned within several generations is already a massive deterrent from moving out their.

I mean we had the complete reverse happen in Michigan. The car industry pulled out and caused an entire city to nearly collapse in on itself.

  2. Money can’t solve this, it’s not like millionaires have more babies on average and we’re not going to make everyone millionaires. In fact, birth rates tend to correlate positively with poverty.

  3. Getting people to move to the countryside would take a decent tax incentive, I think.
The convenience of living in the city is not to be taken lightly.

And if you're moving to the countryside, how will you get a job when all the large corporations have put their offices in the same major locations?
The government should probably get the big companies on board by encouraging more work from home instead of having people sleep at their desks or journey far and wide on ridiculous commuting schedules.

The work culture is definitely an important factor of why I wouldn't want to live and work in Japan.

  4. I think Japan should start opening up more on the house helper/ nanny culture.. many of the moms after maternity leave in my company, ends up quitting after using the maternity leave 😢

  5. There are no young men to get married to. Only OLDER people live out there and there may not be any men young enough to have children. Yes, college educated women want to work in rice fields with a child on their back?? How sexist and ignorant. You should discuss the older people in rural villages bullying young people moving out and trying to revitalize the rural areas, then leaving because it’s a toxic environment. Older men in corporations need to allow women a decent salary, child care, maternity leave without shaming them to leave and birth their baby. My daughter received 6 months of PAID maternity leave and has been allowed to work from home. Has been doing this for 4 years now. Great salary, benefits, bonuses and promotions. Change the corporate working mans mindset. Working employees 40+ hours a week mandatory even though there may not be any work to work on. Get rid of the drinking culture. You would also increase employee productivity by supporting them in their work and personal lives. With the yen being so low I can only imagine young people wanting to leave Japan for work elsewhere in the world.

  6. That's less than hilarious it has nothing to do what's any kind of equality it's mostly because men and women are afraid to even touch talk or even communicate in any way basically in a nutshell men and women are deathly afraid of each other No hugs no kisses barely afraid to touch hands that's the actual problem

  7. From memory you have to click a screen at the register to say you are over age to buy alcohol at Combini. No one has ever asked for proof though! Had fun harassing 19year old son when travelling with him!!😂

  8. Crazy. I am a 34 year old single furry larper man child gamer (at least I have a job), and Chris, same age, is a teacher, influencer, podcaster, married and has opened a bar in Tokyo. It just seems like, different people are different 😂

  9. Ramen-yakuza straight outta Zatochi the Blind Swordsman 😉 Your podcast has grown on me a bit, though I sometimes hunger for guest appearances.

  10. 11 million empty houses. Hmmm, perhaps some carefully planned immigration. Golden visa, retirement visas, digital nomads…

I'd buy, renovate and live in regional Japan in a flash. Happy to learn Japanese and engage with the community.

I understand the sensitivity to non-Japanese people influencing the traditional Japanese way of life, but plummeting birth rates and an aging population isn't going away.

  11. 19:37 That was my feeling when I did a trip through England and Wales, and there wasn't even a language barrier! I'm not a very social person, but walking around London, Cardiff, and Brighton surrounded by people, but completely alone just felt a little hollow at times. I did have amazing pictures at Seven Sisters though.

  12. That phone is so much closer to Chris than I thought. I thought it was further back and much bigger.

  13. Did some googling and the pink phone is coin operated and is called the NTT 675S-A2. Not much info aside from it's a public phone from the Showa era.

  14. The Jolly cookbook here in the west is known as the Anarchists cookbook. Popular back in my day as well at school lol. I don't recommend being caught with it now, however.

As it could ruin your school day or your career, possibly lol. Is school a career for some high school students, as I wonder? 🤔

As far as enticing women away to the countryside seems futile. If Japan can't fix it shrinking domestic population.

As there won't be enough young people to entice. To be fair we are having a similar problem here as well. Not sure what the answer is but i guess its a place to start. 🙄😞

  15. America creates economic zones to insight business to move to rural area that creates well paid individual move to the area, helps out local business and promotes local growth.

  16. ehhhhh the outro on the spotify podcast was different, was funky jazz like hehe…i like listening to the podcast whist driving still, feels like am training my ears to listen better if that makes sense.

  17. In my favourite rural town of Tokoname, the tourist office and ceramic gallery is being closed, no one can work out why. It's a ceramic town and the Gallery is a showcase for local potters. How to reduce locals income in one fell swoop.

  18. My first thoughts for attempts to save the countryside is, open up more immigration, including digital nomads. Pass some laws to help social mobility, like maybe banning that landlord gift. Offering tax incentives for companies to be located outside a handful of major cities, and allowing stay at home workers. I’m no expert so maybe some of that is dumb but its gotta be smarter than the cash for countryside brides plan

  19. Hey guys! I’m thinking of a solo trip for my graduation from my Master’s program in 2025, and I was wondering: what do you think is the shortest length solo trip I could do while still enjoying it? Thanks for always making my commutes more enjoyable with the podcast! Cheers.

  20. It does seem like it would be logical to support young families who want to be able to afford kids to be able to have more affordable places and spaces to live. I'm guessing just a cash award didn't help that much, though. But yaknow, some energetic people and businesses being coordinated and backed in recolonizing some of the diminishing towns would actually attract still more people and young families?

  21. Sometimes I hear of people saying Japan is an introverts dream. I wonder those who went to Japan with this being apart of their reason how they feel about that a few months or years later.

  22. I thought I was the only person on planet Earth who isn't that in to Oasis. This episode made me feel less alone, thank you hahahaha!

  23. I wish it was better for women in the US to have children but it's also a matter of choosing your kids or your career. Childcare alone can be up to $3k-$4k a month and the waitlists to these daycare centers can be years long. Some people have to enroll their kids before they're even born to get a chance.
