What is Kameido Katori Shrine?
Katori Shrine was founded in the 4th year of Emperor Tenchi’s reign (665) when Fujiwara Kamatari, on his way to the eastern provinces, docked his ship at Kamejima Island, invited Katori Okami, offered a sword, and prayed for a safe journey, making it one of the oldest shrines in Edo.
When Taira no Masakado started a rebellion in the Tenkei era (938-947), Fujiwara no Hidesato, the expeditionary commander, visited Katori Shrine and prayed for victory. The rebellion was put down, and he offered a bow and arrow as an offering of thanks to the gods, naming the shrine Katsuya (winning arrow). Because of this ancient event, the “Katsuya Festival” (May 5th) is still celebrated today.
Deeply revered by military commanders such as Minamoto no Yoritomo and Tokugawa Ieyasu, as well as many martial artists including the master swordsman Tsukahara Toden and Chiba Shusaku, Katori Okami is revered as the ancestor of martial arts and is currently revered as the god of sports.

Main shrine portable shrine (konnyaku portable shrine)
It was built in 1878, long ago, and was made by metalworker Yazawa of Kameido, and completed in 1878, taking about five years to make. When carried, the roof, body, and base each move separately, and it is commonly known as the “konnyaku portable shrine.” It is a rare and precious portable shrine, with only two in existence in Japan (one in Kyushu). It is truly a trick portable shrine.
