In July, enjoy the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto 🏮
The Gion Matsuri is a festival celebrated in Kyoto every July, and was originally established to combat plague and natural disasters.
It is one of the country’s three biggest festivals, along with the Tenjin Matsuri (Osaka) and the Kanda Matsuri (Tokyo).
The great floats of the Gion Matsuri are even listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The float processions take place in two events: on July 17 to invite the gods out (saki-matsuri) and on July 24 to thank them for their visit (ato-matsuri).
Before the processions, all the traditional districts are illuminated and decorated with lanterns 🏮
It’s a lovely time to visit the former imperial capital ☺️
