Today we make our first stop in Japan to tour Ishigaki Japan. This is a quite town, but we had an amazing sushi meal and found a bar hidden in vending machine!

hello and welcome back everyone to our 9month around the world ultimate Cruise adventure and today we are in ishigaki Japan where we have a tour cancelled but we have an amazing Sushi meal we really do welcome to living pH [Music] 2 hi I’m Mike and I’m Nancy and we’re empty nesters striving to live with life to the fullest and we’re living that full life going around the world on Royal Caribbean’s 9-month ultimate World cruise on serenate to the Seas we sure are well friends today we are in ishag dasi Japan and we really only have a little bit of time here uh the ship doesn’t arrive till later in the morning and then a relatively uh early All Aboard time so but then we also have to do a face-to-face immigration with the the Japanese immigration uh people so they they Japanese immigration people come on board but it takes about two hours for everyone to go through the face tace immigration process yes right but overall they were pretty efficient with it they had 10 uh immigration officials from Japan on board and they lined us up they brought us through and you know really they just looked at our um uh we gave our name they actually took our fingerprints did all that and they got us through and so by then it was about 11:00 in the morning now we did have a tour plann for today was canell but it was canceled yeah the tour operator called us less than one day before um it was actually arranged through a friend of ours and just said so it was not a royal tour right right and just said hey it’s canceled and we’re like okay and the tour was actually out to a place called Phantom Island now um ishag gashi is is really known as kind of a Beach Town um go to the beach go snorkeling go scuba diving that’s the big activities here A friend of ours went scuba diving here saw manta rays had a great time so we were going to snorkle at we little disappointed by the way it’s called Phantom Island it’s very famous here because the island at high tide disappears and at low tide that’s when the island appears it’s a sandbar really is all it is and uh so yeah we were kind of excited a little disappointed but we said we decided you know what we’re just going to make the best of it we got with a couple friends and said let’s just go into town and explore yeah let’s let’s find out what there is to see here yeah yep so we got off the ship and found a taxi tax right So Pro tip uh friends there are no Ubers here in Japan they don’t use uh right share is is illegal here in Japan so you do need to use a taxi but we felt very comfortable with using a taxi they’re all they’re all metered we felt like it was easy it was honest and uh the ride into you could walk into town it’s about a 30 minute walk but to take a taxi it cost us $7 now another Pro tip not all taxis take credit cards and since this was our first stop in Japan we had not uh taken out any Japanese Yin yet which is probably a good time to mention we really learned our lesson on that in our previous stop in Tai so go back and take a look at that video and to make sure that you don’t miss any of those be sure to hit like subscribe turn on those notifications so you see every one of our videos as we’re going around the world so yeah we didn’t have any Japanese Yin yet um but we took the taxi and that was actually the very first stop we went to uh in one of the local grocery stores they had an ATM they actually also had a currency conversion machine so if you had American dollars you could feed those in and it would give you Japanese Yen back but we used the ATM got out plenty of money because we have six total stops in Japan on this world trip and now we had our Japanese Yen for our at least this trip and several others looking forward we actually did have one stop before the ATM the taxi dropped us off at a park and they had a peace Bell there’s several different places around the world that do that have these peace Bells uh they’re made from melted down you know coins coins and medals and different things people donate to make the peace Bell and it was nice to see it was really uh um an interesting Park but then yeah we walked in town got the ATM and then just walked around town a little bit but because it was such a late arrival we wanted some lunch right and we wanted a very authentic lunch and so we found an authentic sushi place and this this was very very unique see you’re unique to us because you go and you take your shoes off and where we sat uh our table we kind of had to crawl in almost and then our our feet were down below the the table but it was just different um than having a regular chair sitting at a tall table we were at a very short table yeah yeah and the other thing is because again uh very traditional uh local type restaurant we walked in and immediately kind of came up and recognized us as you know not Japanese obviously and he had a piece of paper that he showed us and he says point to menu to order or order from QR code right he just he just held up the piece of paper that was written in English that said that and uh so we took all the menu was actually outside the restaurant and we took had taken pictures of the menu so that we could you know again everything was just by picture and then we could go inside well it happened to be the QR code he talked about we were all struggling with our phones for some reason the internet wasn’t working very well um we let him know get very friendly he brought his phone over scann the QR code and got things sent to the kitchen that way and we pointed at things from the pictures of the menu we took outside and so we’re showing him and saying this and he goes oh okay and he went on his phone and pointed at it and and a lot of pointing and a lot of nodding but we got exactly what we wanted to order we got beautiful Sushi or beautiful uh fish oh my goodness and the meal was absolutely delicious the fish the sushi the shashimi the ngiri um just some of the best that I’d ever had and very different fish than maybe the what we’ve had in the past some were almost a buttery flavor and then we also had we had a little bit there’s a little seaweed salad as well as sea grapes which were yes yeah they they’re very very little teeny teeny teeny grapes on a on a vine and they just kind of pop in your mouth and they were selling them later at the local market all over not a whole lot of flavor but it was neat to see yep so all of us really really enjoyed that meal uh just again sharing a meal with friends and just enjoying it uh actually there was a couple other our friends in the same sushi place we didn’t even realize they were there they were on the other side of the in a booth and no enjoyed that a lot well we finished that up finished our meal up uh luckily and and just as an aside he did take credit cards um so you know we paid with a credit card in this place to save our Yen uh went on down went to a local market and just walked around the market enjoyed that well wait a minute you went to a bar first that’s that was so we’re walking down the street and somebody had pointed out and said hey be sure to look at the vending machine down the street we’re like well it’s Japan is a big vending machine culture and this vending machine said it was broken right so but you just pull on it a little bit it opens up a handle and uh the the whole vending machine swings out and there is a bar behind the vending machine and it was it only seats four people although we were able to squeeze about six in there and uh there were some other people from our ship in there and uh wonderful proprietor he doesn’t speak any English of course but it’s you know we all got our points across and with the beers that he had and we just had a beer and laughed and in fact I got my big long stick out and was able to uh take a picture of the entire place and us um from the top and you can see that here what just just a it was really a lot of fun and we had a beer and then eventually we crawled back out of the vending machine and and again a friend of ours happened to be outside and she took uh took video of us crawling out of the vending machine uh you know secret passageway I I didn’t actually go into the vending machine that that one of the girls and I went went on ahead and went to the market where you met with us yeah we did um so yeah after the vending machine and after you strolling around the market a little bit we just looked as you know um again um some tourist stuff but also a lot of local things everything from knife shops to you know things that the locals would come in anything buy anything that they needed um however as we were kind of wrapping up our time there we passed some other friends of ours and they said did you have the sule pancakes and no we missed that and so we went went to a little spot that was in a market that was kind of in a lower level and there was a a vendor there it was almost like a food quart so if you could picture I mean all these little little food vendor type places spaces were there but but in a food court area with tables all in the center right so we went back and ordered a one order for five of us of the Su pancakes CU we were so full from the sushi but we had to try these and they were quite delicious um very diff I mean again it’s not a pancake they’re they really are more like a sule and they just almost disappear in your mouth they’re not doughy at all yeah it egg and air and well after our pancake treat it was time to head back to the ship cuz as was mentioned early it was a fairly short day in Port and not only that we wanted to get some rest up because we do have multiple backto backto back Port days here and the next day is okanawa Japan yes and I’m very excited for this we’re going to get uh Tak in a little bit of World War II history and in addition to that have another wonderful meal that’s right well friends we’re so glad you you’re here you know we always appreciate you so I hope you have a wonderful day take care byebye now thank you [Music]

Your videos are such a highlight of my day. They are uplifting and always interesting. I wish everyone had the positive attitude that the two of you seem to have. You've make lemonade out of lemons instead of endless negativity and whining about things not going as planned. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us.
Thank You 🙏🏻

Totally agree you guys are so educational and also have such positive energy and attitude. So relaxing watching your videos
Your videos are so much fun to watch!!
I love Japan! My in laws lived in Tokyo for a few years in the 90’s so I fortunately was able to visit just one time. Definitely want to go back! I had my first try of sushi there and that was at a small restaurant with a conveyer belt that the sushi just rolled by and you picked whatever you wanted. You paid by how many plates you had stack up at the end of the meal. Fabulous!!! 🍣
What a fun time! Love the vending machine bar!
Love your videos ! Just got back from a month cruising Japan. Amazing culture and wonderful people. The vending machines all over are insane ha ha.
I love Japan thanks for sharing can't wait to see more. Also I love how everyone does something different and we can see different adventures. Amazing
How do you know how much local currency to get at each country
A cancelled tour can be a blessing 🙂What a great meal!
Wow!!! So many great vids this week!!!!I m kinda surprised how things were kinda in disaray. All i hear is how clean Japan is.
Thanks for sharing, all the videos are amazing!!!!
Hi. The vending machines are wonderful. Can’t wait to see more from Japan.
“Show me your papers!” Really? You all looked like a bunch of lambs being led out! We did not like that!
What a fabulous trip. I noticed you often go to ATM machines for local currency. Are all the ATMs in English?
I so enjoy all your videos. I feel like I’m going around the world with you! Much love❤️
So what do you do with all this extra world currency you accumulate over time? I'm sure it adds up.
I really enjoy following your adventures on the Ultimate World Cruise, thanks for sharing the experience! Can I ask you a question too please? How do have such good luck finding good local guides across so many ports instead of using Royal Caribbean for excursions. Are you using a website that reviews them like Tripadvisor or doing your own research? p.s what’s your next port?
How much yen did you take at the ATM? I will be cruising Japan next year.
Excited for Okinawa as I used to live there. My husband was a Marine Corps pilot.
Love your videos! I think your cruise sounds fantastic! I am retired and travel with a local tour company in my Arizona town. Met some wonderful friends there and in July we are taking a tour/cruise on Princess to Alaska. Never have been so very excited. Happy travels!
Thank you for another delightful video. I will have such withdraws when the cruise is over. hugs

So enjoy your videos 😀 Many of the places you are visiting we've visited in the past, therefore it's so much fun to see them again, see what we have missed and enjoy watching your experience. Your positive, honest and no nonsense approach is enjoyable, educational and delightful. Thank you so much for sharing your travels and adventures with us. Keep it up! 😁
One day I’ll get up the nerve to try sushi. The soufflé pancakes looked yummy. Loved the vending machine speakeasy. My USMC dad was stationed in Okinawa – looking forward to next video.
