NAGASAKI: A Journey Through Remembrance Ep. 53 Ultimate World Cruise| BZ Travel

Join BZ Travel in Episode 53 of our Ultimate World Cruise as we explore Nagasaki, Japan—a city of profound historical importance and stunning natural beauty. Nestled in the narrow valleys of Kyushu Island, Nagasaki’s scenic harbor and mountainous backdrop are overshadowed by its poignant history as the second city to experience an atomic bombing during World War II.

This episode takes you through our emotional visit to Nagasaki, beginning with a serene journey through Nagasaki Bay, under the expansive bridges, and into the heart of a city marked by its past yet vibrant in its present. As we walk the streets of this resilient city, we head towards the Nagasaki Peace Park, the memorial dedicated to promoting peace and remembering the tragic events of August 9, 1945.

At the Peace Park, we stand at the epicenter of the atomic explosion, reflecting on the immense impact of this event—not just the immediate destruction and loss of life, but also the enduring call for peace and the moral questions it raises. The park serves as a reminder of the horrors of nuclear warfare and a beacon of hope for a future free from such calamities.

We share insights into the day’s somber visit, from the complex emotions at the Peace Park to the surprising ease of navigating the city via its efficient streetcar system. Nagasaki’s story is not just one of historical significance but also of incredible urban resilience and recovery, which continues to inspire visitors from around the world.

Nagasaki Japan a place where all world
leaders need to
visit situated on the west coast of
kushu the third largest island of Japan
and almost 1,000 km from Tokyo it’s set
in a narrow Valley surrounded by
mountains with Nagasaki Bay creating a
natural Harbor we’re gliding through
Nagasaki Bay we’re up on the top deck
with a thrill of anticipation of
exploring a new
place wow we just cleared the bridge
with only a few feet to
spare captivated by the beauty of the
surrounding mountains contrasting
against the Clear Blue Skies slowly the
city reveals itself this port is
different than the others Nagasaki
history brings me a complex blend of
emotions I’m not sure what to think
about this dark chapter of human
history welcome to
Nagasaki we finally made it it’s
beautiful day it’s not going to be too
hot or cold it’s nice we have a
welcoming party
here and we’re going to walk around uh
the town we got some great ideas that
we’re going to see
after immigration you get out you take a
left and you head up the street like two
blocks and you’re at the tram every
body’s taking the tram because that’s an
easy way to get to
the peace Park peace park that’s our
first
stop we’re on the tram they just told us
to get on we we didn’t know how to pay
and nobody else did so we’re not sure
what’s going on we’ll figure it
out after you get off the street car you
just cross the street go up the hill
follow the signs and you’re there and uh
looks like pretty much everybody has
come here August 9th at
11:02
1945 the crime against humanity occurred
sad day human history and let’s hope it
never ever happens
again this is the exact location where
the bomb was dropped and
exploded the
epicenter this exactly where it
drops they didn’t know where they were
dropping it they just dropped
it anywh it goes wasn’t even supposed to
even be dropped on this
city
survived at 11:02 the exact moment the
bomb
exploded massive civilian
casualties such a destructive
weapon it’s just hard to believe that
was that actually happened
these are selected as candidates for
atomic bombings Tokyo bay Kawasaki
Yokohama Nagoya Osaka KOB Kyoto harima K
yata kokura yeah they used it against
your P any prior warning approximately
70,000 people died with many affected by
long-term radiation sickness we were
told that the bomb was Dro to end the
war but the ethical dilemma of
indiscriminate killing of civilians is
inherently wrong regardless of the
outcome the amount of nuclear weapons in
existence today day should scare
everyone well that was an emotional
visit it bothered
me 79 years
later looking around we’re amazed of the
resilience of the Japanese people
[Music]
it’s extremely easy to get around here
in Nagasaki with the with the street car
it’s you just jump on and then when you
get off you go to the front and you pay
he has the driver uh has changed there
there’s a there’s a machine and it gives
you change it’s super easy don’t bring
more than a th000
Yen and uh yeah you get around any real
easy from the St City each ride is 90
cents so it’s it’s
easy and you can do whatever you want to
a lot of people yeah there was a lot of
people using it it was packed former
Dutch Trading
Post the gima this is the deima area the
site of the former Dutch Dutch uh
Factory Dutch
Factory back in 1636
oh what’s really neat is that the the
sidewalks here in Nagasaki I don’t know
if it’s like that anywhere else in Japan
but it’s rubber coated and it makes it
really easy on your knees and your feet
they have a strip for Sight impaired
people from what we are experiencing so
far uh We’ve noticed that Japan is quite
a bit less expensive than it was in
Korea to be
honest that’s our home
for the next five
months yeah five more months that
go M mobile a mobile home yeah mobile
home all we have to do is get on it and
get off of it they feed us they take
care of
us they do our laundry laundry yeah do
our laundry clean our

entertained right across the street from
the ship is Glover Park however on your
way up the hill to Glover Park really

zaro the cold beer idea climb the stairs
yeah climbing the stairs oh there this
look
at look at this oh wow outside escalator

you can go up you don’t have to take all
these stairs it’s
great yeah now this is directly across
the street from the
ship there’s the garden route map is
quite big
well there’s all kinds of stuff to see
it’s going to be fun so yeah we really
noticed everything is like spotless the
windows you don’t even know there’s
Windows right here but we have this
escalator
that they have this escalator that’s
whipping us up the
hill wow it’s really nice
they have a Japanese tea garden Tea
House not up for that Z’s looking for

how he likes
it
love you haven’t even tested it yet they
have this cute little food truck right
here ordered a chicken sandwich a smoked
chicken sandwich out of this little food
truck but it’s in a really cute setting
you’re sitting here and under the trees
overlooking the water you’re not going
to believe what just happened I had the
sandwich in my hand I was going for a
bite and that was a blink of an eye and
something hit my hand and it was like a
hawk came down grabbed it out of my
hands and flew off with it and I look up
in the sky and my sandwich is dripping
out of his claws and made I didn’t even
it was like it was so fast it was like a
split second it was
shocking my God I’ve seen seagulls do it
but not a hawk it was a big big bird
maybe I think it was a big Hawk he was
huge but I couldn’t believe like I feel
felt this claw hit my finger it’s like
didn’t even know what happened it’s
like I’m so happy they don’t like beer
it’s claws just grabbed it out of my
hands in a split second it was so weird
CU I was going for a bite and all a
sudden it was out of my
hands what the

  1. I carry that memory years later of going through peace museum and seeing round zero . City was beautiful, which was hard for me to grasp after knowing what happened.

  2. What a beautiful city – and I also found your footage and reporting on the Nagasaki bomb very emotional. All those lives lost. But also amazing to see how the city has recovered from such brutality and today seems a really lovely place. I loved all the trees on the streets and how clean and ordered it all was. Looking forward to the next stop!
