It is the first temple of Japanese Buddhism, built by Prince Shotoku in 593.
The temple has survived numerous natural disasters and war damage, and has continued to exist until the present day.
It is a temple that transcends sectarian boundaries with its Shitennoji-style temple structure, which conveys the oldest temple structure in Japan, and halls dedicated to Saicho, Kukai, Shinran, and others.
The main temple building is a Showa-era reconstruction that reconstructed the style of the temple when it was first built, but the Rokujiki-reisando and Gansan-daishido, located on the north side of the temple grounds, were built in the early Edo period and are designated as national important cultural properties.
In addition, there is a museum of treasures that holds many national treasures and important cultural properties.
On the 21st and 22nd of every month, the temple grounds are filled with many stalls and other attractions.
