This time, we’re embarking on a globally rare dinosaur train journey! The dinosaurs are so realistic, they seem like they could start moving at any moment. We’ll introduce you to a Japanese area that dinosaur enthusiasts should visit at least once. Our journey begins in Fukui Prefecture.

Finally, the Hokuriku Shinkansen has reached Tsuruga Station! Yay! Fukui Prefecture was selected as one of the “12 Best World Travel Destinations in 2024” by the Washington Post. It’s been three years since my last visit to Fukui. I’m really looking forward to returning. We’ve arrived at “Fukui Station”, the kingdom of dinosaurs!

Wow! Right away, we see dinosaurs fighting at the station! Fight! Fukui Prefecture has the highest amount of dinosaur fossil excavations in Japan. 80% of the dinosaur fossils excavated in Japan are found in Fukui Prefecture. So, the area around Fukui Station is teeming with dinosaurs.

The number of dinosaurs at the station has clearly increased since three years ago. It’s an area that dinosaur lovers will find irresistible. Now, let’s head to the mysterious dinosaur train. The dinosaur train can be boarded from the Echizen Railway next to JR Fukui Station.

You need to make a reservation online in advance for the train. Here we find another dinosaur! It’s a very intelligent-looking dinosaur wearing a lab coat. The dinosaur train heads from Fukui Station to Katsuyama Station, where the dinosaur museum is located.

It runs one round trip per day. The train journey is about an hour. Tickets are collected at a special sales booth inside the station. Now, let’s board the train! The outbound ticket includes the dinosaur train ride, museum admission, and bus fare, making it very convenient.

The electronic display reads “Dinosaur Train”, which is amusing! Wow!!! The Dinosaur Train has arrived!!! The train’s exterior is covered in dinosaur illustrations!!! The dinosaur train consists of two cars. The first car is the “Jurassic Zone”, featuring dinosaurs that lived in the Americas. Now, we’ll board the train.

We board from the second car, the Fossil Excavation Zone. Wow!!! The entire carriage is filled with dinosaur fossils!!! You can sit anywhere you like. There’s a large carnivorous dinosaur fossil on display. The seats have a fossil pattern and are very cute!

Monitors are installed throughout the carriage, broadcasting dinosaur quizzes and animations during the trip. Oh. It’s almost time to depart. The dinosaur train is a charter train only for those who have reserved. Since we boarded on a weekday, there are fewer people. It often gets fully booked on holidays, so weekdays are recommended.

Fossils of ammonites and trilobites. They look just like the real thing. Katsuyama city, which we’re about to visit, is the area where the most dinosaur fossils are excavated in Japan. In addition to dinosaurs, fossils of fish, turtles, and crocodiles have also been excavated. We’ve spotted a particularly noticeable passenger inside. That’s a “Fukuiraptor”.

“Fukuiraptor” was the first dinosaur fossil discovered in Fukui Prefecture. There are many dinosaurs named after Fukui Prefecture, such as “Fukuisaurus”, “Fukuititan”, and “Fukui”. We’ve arrived at the Jurassic Zone of the first car. Wow!!! There’s a dinosaur head!!! It’s so scary!!!

Although it looks very hard, it’s made of a material that’s soft like a cushion when touched. It seems to be designed to prevent injuries if someone bumps into it. It looks just like something out of the movie “Jurassic Park”.

Most of the dinosaurs illustrated on the train are displayed at the “Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum” we’re about to visit, including birds. It’s a surreal sight you wouldn’t expect inside a train. A dinosaur quiz has started inside the train. The difficulty level is very gentle.

Fossils have been excavated in various places throughout Japan, not just in Fukui Prefecture. There are spaces for wheelchairs and strollers. The illustrations are dinosaur-themed and cute. As we approach the final stop, the attendants hand out dinosaur cards and notebooks. So, let’s take a look inside. The notebook features original dinosaurs from Fukui Prefecture.

Next, the card. Inside was a card of an Allosaurus. The monitor shows the current location of the train. As we get closer to Katsuyama Station, we start to see a bit of snow in the town. I wonder if it’s cold outside?

About an hour after boarding the train, we finally arrive at Katsuyama Station. Time flew by while watching the monitors and looking at dinosaurs inside the train. Since I’ve also reserved the 16:05 return trip, I’ll head to the dinosaur museum until then. Oh, it’s cold.

I came dressed lightly, thinking it wouldn’t be too cold in late March. Katsuyama Station is also full of dinosaurs. Dinosaur merchandise is sold at the station. T-shirts are so popular that they sell out. There are also snacks and rice for sale, which is fun.

This time, I purchased a stamp card from Katsuyama Station! It has a design of a train inside a dinosaur’s mouth, which is super cool! Now, let’s board the bus directly connected to the dinosaur museum. People with a round-trip dinosaur train ticket can ride the bus within Katsuyama city for free.

It takes about 20 minutes to get to the dinosaur museum. It’s a non-stop ride to the museum, so it’s very smooth. We’ve arrived at the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. The museum entrance fee is also included in the round-trip dinosaur train fare.

The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum is said to be one of the world’s three major dinosaur museums, alongside Canada’s Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology and China’s Zigong Dinosaur Museum. It has become a popular tourist spot, attracting 800,000 visitors annually. The number of visitors has increased significantly due to the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen!

The museum was renovated last year, and it’s very crowded inside. The museum is clearly more crowded now compared to three years ago. Many people are coming to see them, making the dinosaurs happy too. Inside the museum, 50 dinosaur skeletons are on display, 10 of which are made from real fossils.

It’s hard to imagine that such large creatures once lived. Japan used to be called a “dinosaur laggard” because research on dinosaurs was behind. However, in recent years, new species of fossils have been found in Japan, and research seems to have advanced significantly. It looks like a dinosaur boom is coming all over Japan.

The fossils excavated in Katsuyama City are carried to the fossil cleaning room inside the museum. Using a microscope, rocks around the fossils are removed with machines. Cleaning the fossils is a very meticulous and important task. This area displays creatures that lived in the sea. !? Look, there’s a squid.

It’s interesting that creatures of different shapes and sizes are excavated as fossils. If such creatures existed, humans would have been extinct. Not only large dinosaurs, but also small ones exist. I’d like to keep a dinosaur of this size at home. Such a large animal wouldn’t get attached to me.

It would probably see me only as food. Let’s go to the newly reopened three-sided Dino Theater. The screen is very large, offering a full sense of presence. Dinosaurs staring each other down. Oh? Before I knew it, I had arrived at Fukui Station. The museum has a restaurant and a museum shop.

It’s been renovated to become very spacious, and the number of goods has increased significantly. One side is filled with dinosaurs!! Just looking at what products are available is a lot of fun. So cute!! There are plush toys of dinosaurs that look like Pokémon. The dinosaurs have become healing idol characters.

The merchandise lineup is very wide, even finding a school backpack! I wonder who would buy this, being so expensive? There are also many dinosaur fangs for sale. Personally, I want a dinosaur head… 90,000 yen!? ($595) I can’t afford it… I found coffee that smells like dinosaurs.

It sounds interesting, so I’ll buy it and try it at home. And speaking of Fukui, Habutae Mochi is very famous. I also bought a dinosaur keychain. Inside the shop, there’s also a restaurant. Wow!! That looks delicious! Apart from curry and hamburgers, they even have parfaits!! Wow!! It’s an 80-minute wait!!

If you go on a holiday, I think it’s better to make a restaurant reservation as soon as you enter. Let’s take a look at the menu while waiting. Curry, hamburgers, omelet rice… Makes you want to eat everything. Orders are made through the latest ticket machines.

It’s very convenient because you can switch the display to English besides Japanese. I haven’t eaten anything today, so I’ll eat a lot. When the food is ready, they call you by number. It’s super convenient that you can carry your food in a cart! Let’s enjoy the meal while viewing the giant fossils.

Ta-da! The main dish is Spinosaurus curry!! And for dessert, pudding and juice. I also bought a mysterious sweet. Let’s start with the Spinosaurus curry. Is the rice mixed grain? It looks like a pattern and is very cute. The Spinosaurus’ sail is not edible.

The chicken wings are freshly fried, and the curry is really delicious. For the drink, I chose the “Fukuiraptor” soda. A mature soda mixed with strawberry and coffee. The most popular flavor among children is the “Fukuisaurus” soda (a mix of melon and citrus)!

The sweet is a “Diorama Pudding” released to commemorate the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen. It includes a Fukuititan monaka. The pudding layers look like geological strata, which is visually interesting. It’s a refreshing yogurt pudding and very delicious. What could this be? This dessert is a “cake tracing the history of dinosaurs.”

By shaking the test tubes in order, you can learn about the history of dinosaurs. First, you sprinkle the “water” test tube. This recreates the Triassic period from 251 million years ago. What’s inside the test tube is probably sugar water, not actual water. Next, sprinkle the “air” test tube. This period represents the Jurassic.

Ah, I spilled a lot. Next is the “green” test tube, representing the Cretaceous. The actual content of the test tube is crushed pistachios. Last is the “meteorite” test tube. The dinosaurs have safely gone extinct. Let’s try eating the Earth with HP at 0. The yellow Earth turned out to be an egg cake.

It’s a very well-thought-out cake and quite interesting. It tastes delicious. But it takes away all the moisture in your mouth. Since it’s almost time for my return train, I’ll head back to Katsuyama Station. I’ve picked up my return ticket, and I’m all set.

The return journey has fewer people, so you can closely observe the dinosaurs. If dinosaurs hadn’t gone extinct and were still alive today, what would the modern era look like? Maybe there would have been a dinosaur zoo in Fukui Prefecture. Departing Katsuyama Station at 16:05. Perhaps dinosaurs were surprisingly intolerant of heat?

The Dinosaur Kingdom Fukui was even more powered up. Where shall I go next? Thank you for watching until the end.

  2. I want that train car seat fabric to decorate my living room in. Hahahah. I also don't think it's fair for people to say Japan was a "laggard" in paleontology. I mean, it's not like Japan is a dry huge land mass over a billion years old, like parts of North America or Eurasia. The fact Japan has anything left to find is pretty spectacular.

  3. 恐竜についてたくさんの情報を得ることができてよかったです。 映像拝見させていただきました。 ありがとうございます。❤❤

  15. When the dinosaurs lived it was a lot warmer on this planet. We are currently still climbing out of a mini ice-age. Love the video. Cool musuem. Would love to visit it. I'm a sucker for anything dinosaur related, the train looked cool, although the animation with the over the top voices would drive me nuts.

  16. My goodness, the museum was really full. That wouldn't be for me. What I always like are the photos of the specialities on the menus.

  17. That is really cool. My nephew loves Dinosaurs and if I could take him there he would be thrilled. Thank you for the nice MV🦕🤩

  18. What an adorable and informative idea! Love the train and that museum is geared toward informing youngsters about dinosaur history. Fantastic 🦖 🦕

  20. Congratulations on passing three hundred thousand subscribers Itsuka Chan. I remember when you passed one hundred thousand and now you have 3 times as many. It’s very well deserved.
