Oh tough luck, it is usually little rain in kyoto in winter time. I think you were walking sanjyou- area and Kiyomizu temple area where too many people are walking at daytime.
I think Cherry blossoms in Tokyo will be in full bloom on April 7th. I hope you will see them and back to UK.
