Exploring Japan: Is a Guided Tour Worth It?

Avoid the tourist traps and travel like a local with Magical Trip. They offer various small group tours to give you a truly local experience. We decided to try the Sushi Cooking Class, which included a trip to the supermarket to pick up ingredients. In addition to Sushi, you also learn how to make some traditional Japanese side dishes.

Is it worth joining a guided tour on your trip to Japan let’s find out so last year during our trip to single Park we hopped on a guided tour of a hawker Center which was one of the best things we’ve ever done we got to hear stories we’ve never known before

And it made our trip twice as awesome so today we are diving into a Japanese tour made especially for hoodies like us magical trip is a service that offers a variety of small group local tours and experiences throughout Japan with friendly trained local guides who live in the area offering authentic

Experiences that you wouldn’t find or do on your own thank you to magical trip for inviting us to participate in this tour which is great because that way we get to experience it for ourselves so that we can see whether it’s truly worth it for you guys hi hi nice to meet you

Nice to meet you I’m satosi and he nice to meet you my name is and I’m your guide for today and today we are going to makeo and egg omelets and some eggplant and some I love that and stuff and first we go into the local supermarket and get some fish and

Veggies wonderful so we make four dishes the first one is sushir roll I love that and eggplant and the Mis sauce that’s interesting and Tamaki egg omelette EG roll and also Mis soup this local supermarket we are going to buy tuna tuna salmon salmon tofu and egg and

Eggplant and radish we already have and also cucumber in the imitation crab and chis and K KW okay let’s go I love Supermarket I always go to super okay so first the Cucumber cucumber how many one just one just one okay how do you choose oh that’s a very

Good question usually the the Cucumber HTS like spikes like this oh if it’s a more sharper it’s better cucumber and so K this one so this uh this one will we use for sush roll sush okay this one so today we use the tof for misu so

We use the silk one the soft one we are going to get the tuna o wow love tuna so to get a fresh tuna you always have to see this like in seat under the tuna oh seat yeah see and if dripping a lot that means Umami and a more like a freshness

Losing okay do you like salmon I love salmon and actually I’m alcoholic so I know a lot of sake stuff so if you’re coming to Japan I want you to try those things this is a paper B sake MH we call onori that means devil kill and then

This one has like sto in the back and they were supposed to drink this sake from stro and if you want to get the drink you can get drink from here those one is just normal beer okay this saporo and and kir and then Super maybe you

Might know and we also have half poro which means like a low M beer and it’s little bit cheaper like this normal beer is 200 yen above then this one is 150 Yen or something cheaper but a little bit low Quality okay so first we are going to make a sushi rice so first you pour the sushi vinegar all over a little by little just little by little all over all over the rice yeah and you also like you know like cutting the rice like this is it

Just in One Direction or can I do it like this I can okay you know I actually used to work at a sushi fast food chain in Hawaii yeah yeah but I didn’t make the sushi rice yeah I only made the Nigi and the makushi just just rolling

Molding you know things like that okay yeah but I never made the rice so I don’t know how to cut the fish either oh yeah yeah yeah actually like in my at my home I mean I don’t have this ooden barel so I always use this just normal

Bowl even though I worked at the sushi place I I wasn’t in charge of making the rice so I’m learning something new and I think a lot of you guys would like this so it’s great that you have this tour in Tokyo we do actually have a lot of Tours

Like uh boping tour and histria walking tour and Anime culture like subculture tour not only in Tokyo but also in kyotto and Osaka the biggest city in Japan we actually joined uh one of the magical trip bar hopping tours in Hiroshima a long time ago before the

Little bit and then make a shape okay right here you go my turn guys this is fun for me I have not cooked in so long Yes actually it’s so much easier using a spatula okay and I think that’s okay yeah oh that’s is that good really

Very good awesome oh my God I’m so happy it’s soft huh yeah it’s super soft and don’t hold too tight don’t hold too tight yes like that yep okay so next uh we are going to make grilled eggplant we cut the stem here okay and I cut in half

Like this so you can make the diagonal slits like this you can uh sprinkle the salt onto the eggplant okay okay put miso inside of course you don’t have to use Mis strainer so you can buy this one in a 100 100 y shop Dao oh something oh oh Daiso H da

Okay little bit check that side so in this cooking class you can choose your dish from here oh whatever you like that’s fun I love oh shinichi love these Ceramics so what do you want to choose this one yes so shinichi chose this one you know I’m so glad we’re learning

How to make misaku eggplant because this is one of my favorite foods of all time I never knew that you had to sprinkle the salt to get you know the excess water out no wonder my first attempt it was like terrible pick up rice all of it

All of it this is a 200 g 200 g and you hold ingredients here as well and roll it attach the seaweed tur here yes yes yes yes yes and then roll yes yes yes yes here you go how about mine is it good okay oh nice that’s very nice yeah yeah thank

You’re going to drink beer right once again if you watch his videos you will know that beer is one of his favorite food please wow M perfect texture and perfect sauce taste just using that simple like sh Dashi ingredient I didn’t have to worry about adding salt or sugar or

Anything else it’s it’s perfect it’s so good I don’t remember when is that’s time I made sushi sushii please good Mis that’s really good I’m going to try the eggplant one of my favorite things is good oh wow it’s very good ooh I feel like this goes with um many

Different types of food cuz it’s not sweet or it’s not too strong I like it very easy to drink I think I think even if you’re like a sucket beginner this would be pretty good I I prefer the second one the second one I actually prefer this one so the answer to the

  1. your content has helped me so much when feeling down. thanks for sharing your lives and some truly wonderful japan content.

  2. Would you guys visit an all you can eat expensive fruit buffet in Japan? It would be great to see what types fruits are available and if it's worth the visit

  3. I love guided tours, especially ones that are more intimate, smaller group ones. Call me crazy, but was that a young Satoshi there? Loves beer and is a foodie? One of the first things I like to do when traveling is to go to the grocery store and farmers markets (if they have them), I always think you can learn a lot about a place by visiting those two places. There are only two places I never want to visit when traveling, the local jail and the local hospital.

  4. We booked tours with Magical Trip on both of our trips to Japan. We loved both tours. ❤
Our guide Tommy was so knowledgeable and welcoming. I highly recommend this tour group.

  5. I think Sho was really plugging the bar hopping tour without actually saying, "Please do the bar hopping tour when you come to Japan."🍻😂
Kidding aside, he was cute, and it's nice to know that something like that is available if I ever get to go. It would be nice to book different tours for a lone traveler like myself, so I'm not wandering aimlessly around the city.😊

  6. That tour looks like fun, with sushi, sake and shopping for ingredients. Wonderful to have an activity to do when visiting Japan, especially if you have family or kids.

  7. Very cool. Making the meal would be fun because some ingredients are hard to find in the US, at least where I am. Especially the green veggies in the sushi roll (shisho? And the other one, I forget, lol, I don't think Nivea seen here), and taking the mystery out of the miso soup and egg would make me more confident trying it at home. Thank you!

  8. Love this video and the bonus of seeing one of your older videos that was before I found your channel… Love that hair Shinichi!!! Thanks for all you do, both of you!

  9. I do not like guided tours w/large groups at all. I personally prefer a PRIVATE tour with a very flexible schedule. That way you r not limited to a certain time frame if something catches your interest and you want to spend more time than the tour “allocated” for that activity. I just did a private one in Tokyo and it was awesome! Also, did all private tours in a multi week tour to Italy. They r well worth the money!

  10. No large group, bus-riding tours for me, but focused-interest, small tours with a knowledgeable guide, like this one, are fabulous. 👍Sho was enthusiastic, energetic, informative, and fun. Also, cute. 😊 Using Magical Trip looks like a good way to have a rewarding local experience.
Btw, I also love adventure tours 🎉 and have done several horse-packing, hiking, and rafting/kayaking tours. Nothing like being out in nature for a couple of weeks.

  11. The Magical trip cancelled our tours last minute in 2022. We called and wrote to them and they never replied back. Bad experience with them.

  12. I wouldn't really call it a tour. You go shopping for food and you cook it with the person. It's more like a cooking class, than a tour. During tours, you visit many places and learn many things about them, which was not the case here. Sho was very cute, though. I'll definitely go have a look at his channel.

  13. Not exactly what I would define as a guided tour but rather an "experience". That being said, it seems like a fun time, plenty of people tend to skip over actual supermarkets in favor of a convenience store.

  14. Just looking at the guide makes the tour worth it for me. 😂 He's gorgeous.
I don't want to sound thirsty, but when a man is that good-looking, he deserves a compliment, right?

  15. So the concept of the video is, is the sponsor of this video worth doing? Pretending you don’t know any of this stuff was so awkward! Come on guys, you’re better than this.

  16. I laughed when I saw the introduction to Onigoroshi sake, those who are acquainted with recent anime will know that this is the favorite drink of Hiroi Kikuri from the anime "Bocchi the Rock!" because it's cheap and easily available.
