Tenjin-sama has a long history as one of the 25 sacred shrines of Tenmangu Shrine, which has 10,000 shrines nationwide. In spring, beautiful plum blossoms bloom, and the shrine is crowded with people praying for success in school and academic achievement.

 Tsunashiki Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, the god of learning, and is known locally as Suma no Tenjin-sama, or the “god of Suma,” for its blessings for academic success. It is said that when Michizane Sugawara traveled to Kyushu, he stopped at Suma no Ura and rested on the round seat of a large net built by Suma fishermen.
