This is NOT a promotional video. I pay for all of my flights and hotels (and I always tell you how much!) so I can be as honest and impartial as possible. I do not receive any special treatment that wouldn’t otherwise be publicly accessible, in fact, the hotels and airlines have no idea about my visit and that’s the way I like it!

#aircanada #businessclass #tripreport

Hi there and welcome to Canada, the first time  I get to say that on the channel. Has always   seemed odd to me that I almost went to school  in Canada and yet- have never visited Toronto,

So I decided four hours today was a great start. I just got off of an Air Canada Express flight   from Philadelphia and am now waiting for leg  two of six on this doozy of an itinerary to   get me to Muscat, Oman. This first ticket is from  Philadelphia to Brussels. Originally it was via

Toronto and London, but then my London to Brussels  flight was canceled and Air Canada automatically   rerouted me with an additional stop in Geneva. I would only end up landing in Brussels 40   minutes later than originally scheduled and  frankly I was so impressed that I was given

A new itinerary instantly that I just decided  to go with it. After all, I’m always happy to   have a little extra SWISS in my life. Enough about that, while I get lost   in my first 7 minutes in this airport,  let me welcome you to the channel. My

Name is Kevin and I am the Flip Flop Traveller. I’m here to give you honest content about flights,   hotels, trains and cruises- but mostly the first  two. I paid for this trip out of pocket and the   price I paid is in the description below. Air  Canada had no knowledge I’d be filming today

And I didn’t receive any compensation from them.  Though part of this video is sponsored by Level8   Luggage. Everything in this video is my personal  opinion based on my unique experience. The rest,   I’ll let speak for itself. Let’s get into it. I am flying in Signature Class today,

What Air Canada calls their business class,  but I won’t have the supposed pleasure of   visiting the Air Canada Signature Suite  lounge. This ticket was booked with points   which automatically makes it ineligible for the  Signature Suite since that is only for business

Class passengers who paid with cold hard cash. That said, the Maple Leaf Lounge was in fact   nicer than I was expecting. The decor felt a bit  like Air France and SWISS had a baby around 2005,   but the seats were comfortable and there  were plenty of outlets which worked if

You propped your plug up just so. The food was basic- today seemed to   be tomato day, but it was all tasty,  especially those little sliders.  Booze was freely and quickly flowing  in all directions as well. The whole   lounge had a definite “we’re going  on vacation” vibe. It was nice.

And surely if you’re going on vacation,  you’re gonna need some reliable baggage   and that’s why this portion of the  video is sponsored by Level 8 Luggage.  Y’all know I always prefer to be carry on  only- but sometimes, you just have a bunch

Of extra clothes and souvenirs or in my case,  35 pounds of dog treats and chihuahua sized   orthopedic mattress toppers. Yeah anyway, for  those times I need to pull out the big guns,   in my case the 28” Voyager trunk. Truth is, I was never that picky about

My checked in bag before- but now I get it. Key points here, built into the Makrolon®   polycarbonate shell is the wide stance handle  that I’ve come to love so much. It makes   pushing this thing effortless. Second thing,  that handle smack in the middle of the front

Of the bag. I honestly cannot understand  why every bag on earth doesn’t have this.  Lastly, besides the great interior organization, I  can’t get over how stable this shape of a bag is.   Even when it’s full, you can’t tip it over.  If you don’t believe me, I encourage you to

Go get your suitcase, fill it to it’s brim and  then try to push it just like I am, on carpet.  So if you or someone you love deserves an awesome  new bag, click the link in the description below   and make sure to use the discount code  KEVIN10 for 10% off of your purchase-

Which brings this bag under $300 bucks. Thanks to Level8 Luggage for their support.  So, I know the question that’s front of  mind for you at the moment is probably,   Why YYZ? Right? No, ok well I’m sure it  is now! YYZ is the airport code for here

At Toronto Pearson International Airport and I  had two questions. Why do almost all Canadian   airports start with Y… and then also, why YZ? So back in the 30s, the US and Canada used   two letter codes. Aviation grew quickly and  they realized a third letter would be needed

And so they started adding them. In the US, when  possible they just tacked an X onto the end of it,   hence LAX. In Canada when they used 2 letters,  they had a classifier in front of the two to

Distinguish if an airport had a radio station or  not. They use Y for Yes and W for Without. So,   Canada just decided to officially adopt  all of those Ys and voila, we solved the Y.  As for the YZ, back in the day, Malton,  Ontario’s code was YZ and that is the

Same area where Pearson stands today.  Now we can all sleep better tonight.  **Located to the northwest of downtown Toronto,  YYZ is the largest and busiest airport in all of   Canada and the largest hub for Air Canada. There  are two terminals, Terminal 3 is essentially the

‘everyone else’ terminal and Terminal 1, where  we are now is home to Air Canada and all of   their Star Alliance friends, as well as Emirates.  Both terminals handle domestic and international   traffic, but each is split into specific gates for  domestic, transborder and international flights.

Air Canada’s roots can be traced back to 1938 when  the government created Trans-Canada Airlines. In   1965 they changed their name to Air Canada. Their  first ever flight was for mail and 2 passengers   from Vancouver to Seattle, with tickets selling  for $14.20 round trip. I presume that’s the 1938

Version of flying Emirates First Class these days. By the 1970s they completely dominated the   domestic market since all of their rivals  were restricted to only operate in one   of five zones across the country  and none could compete directly.  Air Canada was privatized in 1988 following  the government’s decision to deregulate the

Canadian Air Market. Post privatization and  following the Open Skies agreement between   the US and Canada from 1995, they  quickly added 30 transborder routes.  These days, Air Canada flies to 20 domestic  cities, 27 in the US and 67 other international   destinations- note this doesn’t include  their subsidiaries Air Canada Rouge which

Is their leisure carrier and Air Canada Express. On a daily flights basis, they’re currently the   13th largest airline on earth, with a total  of 188 aircraft in their fleet and 109 on   order. Today we will be flying on one of  their 777-300ERs of which they have 21.

I was on the last London flight of the night and  the airport definitely started to quiet down and   close up shop by the time we began boarding.  Our boarding was also about an hour late. Our   aircraft landed late in from Vancouver and then  needed to be towed to us from the domestic gate.

Despite everyone getting antsy, boarding was  well organized. As we head down the jetbridge,   let’s take a look at tonight’s flight stats. I’m not asking this with shade, but is greeting   passengers at the door not a thing on Air Canada?  I got some friendly hellos from four or five crew

As I walked to my seat, but it didn’t seem  like anyone cared about the door itself.  Air Canada operates two versions of the  777-300ER, the difference between the two   being whether or not there is a single Business  Cabin or two of them. Tonight’s aircraft has

Two and I was quick to book the 2nd bulkhead  seat, the 2nd one being my favorite seat on   any aircraft. Bulkhead space with engine  views. Let’s take a look at the layout.  They use the very popular Collins Aerospace  Super Diamond Reverse Herringbone seat which

You’ll find on dozens of airlines in a  1-2-1 configuration. Our aircraft has   40 business class seats spread over 11 rows. Rows 7 and 8 should be avoided for proximity   to the bathroom in row 8 and a missing  window in row 7- but for row 7 and 11,

The two last rows, if you plan to work on the  flight these are your best seats since they   have extra surface space beside them. A peek at the smart looking Premium   Economy and then a detailed look at our seat. It’s a fantastic seat and configuration which

I’ve reviewed many times with plenty of surface  space and a nice storage bin. Of all of the super   diamond seats, this one does probably have the  least amount of closed storage though. Not sure   why they didn’t at least add a magazine rack  or headphone hook on that rear surface if they

Weren’t going to install a storage compartment. My only complaint about this seat is the physical   seat itself. The seat coverings feel really  worn and are starting to look the same- and   compared to other similar seats, these  definitely seemed to have less padding.  Otherwise they’re great. There’s a  digital panel to control the seat.

Inside the storage cubby you have your in  flight entertainment remote along with a   universal outlet, USB port and head phone jack. There’s a small storage space below your armrest   and the armrest itself can telescope up and down. The bulkhead seats seemed to have quite a bit

More space under and behind the TV, a bit  more width and the standard configuration.  There are no doors or anything installed,  but privacy is decent with the offset rows,   but that didn’t matter much since there were  only three of us sitting in this rear cabin.

Pre Departure drinks were offered and  soon after the safety video began.  The captain appologized for the delay, so Canadian  of him, but also explained why we were late which   I appreciated and the safety video began. That really is a beautiful engine. Air Canada

Brought this retro black and white livery  back in 2017 and for like the first day,   I wasn’t a fan, but somehow their old  Frosted Leaf livery instantly looked dated   in comparison and now I love this one. Ok, we pushed back and taxied to the

Runway. The spool up and take off are  coming up next along with the airport   stats. Before we get into the meal service,   let’s explore the in flight amenities a bit,  which were all a bit better than expected.  The pillow was substantial and pretty much  a household style pillow- love this one.

The blanket was a proper duvet- it was a  little scratchy as I remember American Airlines   were as well, but it’ll get the job done. There was also a mattress pad at each   seat. Which as I always say, doesn’t do much,  but something is always better than nothing.

The headphones were fairly cheap, but at least  they weren’t super heavy. Quality was just okay.  Later on in the flight actually, I asked for  an amenity kit because I assumed they didn’t   proactively give them out. I got a bit of a  look from the flight attendant- at the time,

I thought it was annoyance. But when putting this  video together, I realized many other seats had   Amenity Kits at them when we boarded. So, I wonder  if she though I was trying to get a 2nd one- and

I also wonder what happened to my original kit. Anyway, it’s acqua di parma and the pouch itself   is one of the more useful ones out there. Hot towels were passed out and the meal   service was set to begin. Here is the  full menu for the flight. Note that the

Prices in red are my addition to the menu to  give you an idea of the wine value on board.  My tray was kinda plopped down in front of me  and was just kinda all over the place. I always

Thought Air Canada served courses, but I guess on  later flights they want to get in and out ASAP.  The starter ended up being tasty but sounded like  a strange combination with shrimp cocktail with   cocktail sauce, a wasabi sauce and pineapple. The main was hard to get down. It was a sliced

Veal tenderloin with pumpkin risotto and  asparagus. On paper, totally up my alley,   but that veal was like baby cow leather.  Felt like it had been sitting in a warm over   for three days. The risotto and asparagus  flavor was okay but it was just mushfest.

Behind that we also had a cheese course as well as  a few pieces of bread. I don’t know what was going   on with that garlic bread, but that felt like  defrosted but untoasted walmart brand Texas toast.  Finally, we ended up with a raspberry cake  which tasted good, but looked like I got it

From a grammar school bake sale. At least I did  enjoy the Canadian red wine they had on offer.  After the meal service I had a look at the  bathrooms. They were kept clean throughout the

Flight and had some nice products inside as well. As everyone else went to sleep, I had a bit of   an explore of the entertainment system on board  which was okay, but for a North American carrier,   I was expecting a wider selection. In total  there were around 250 movies as well as some

Other unique features like a readable news  feed and a map covered in Maple leaves,   representing every destination they fly to. Soon after that I made up my bed and had a nap,   but waited for some daylight to give you a look. Especially at the bulkhead, there’s plenty of

Room. I know some complain about their  knees hitting the table when lying down   but I’ve never found that to be a big  problem. Overall, a very comfortable bed.  I woke up around 90 minutes  out of London as the crew were

Already in the middle of the 2nd service. Our tray came with a small fruit bowl,   yogurt and a very Burger King-esque  croissant- that’s not necessarily a dig.  The main dish was worse than the dinner. The eggs  were almost okay, just a really weird texture. But

The hash browns were like oil pillows and that  sausage- I don’t think legally I’m allowed to   say I think it’s made of rubber, but I also can’t  say for sure that it’s not. It had the texture of

Vietnamese fish cake wrapped in 12 layers of tofu  skin and then baked then boiled then baked again.  That’s fine though I was still full from dinner  and we had an absolutely beautiful approach which   was way more important than airplane eggs. Views like this are why I love reverse

Herringbone seats. Being able to sit back  from a distance and see the world going by   as you descend is truly one of my happy places. Let’s quickly talk about service. I’ll be honest,   it felt like decent service on any other  North American carrier, but for some reason,

I was expecting something that was ever so  slightly more put together and gracious.   None of the crew were bad or rude or anything  near that, but they were all just pretty short   on all occasions. Sometimes it came off as a  casual familiar vibe but sometimes it came off

As a stop bothering me vibe. It might have been  my fault for expecting something more elevated.  I’ll let you enjoy the final descent as we  approach London Heathrow from the northwest.  So, overall, I think acceptable is a good way  to describe the flight. The food was overall

Slightly below average, the crew was average and  the hard product was slightly above average- so   when you put all of that together, we get  a very exciting, average. Would I fly them   again? Absolutely, would I go out of my  way to fly them again? Eh, probably not.

I really hope you enjoyed this  trip report today, if you did,   please be sure to click the like button and  subscribe to the channel with notifications   on so you don’t miss out on my twice weekly  postings. I’ll see you next time from the TRS

Yucatan Resort in the Mayan Riviera. Oh and  as always, thanks for watching until the end.

  1. Hey Kevin. Great video as always. You probably received about as good as can be expected on AC these days. The fact that the crew even rated as average was surprising, they're usually the element that drags the whole experience into the realm of utter garbage.l believe the slogan is " We're not happy .. till you're not happy."

  2. Same experience for me. Air Canada food was just low quality in comparison to most airlines…Sorry but will not be flying Air Canada again if I can help it.

  3. Love your reviews! Just note two things, You should mention the individual air nozzles. To me, this is very important on flights. Less and less airlines have this. Secondly I never pick the second cabin in J class. Why you ask? People boarding steal stuff from the seats. That is why you didn't have an amenity kit and you had to ask for another one.

  4. I did Air Canada to the UK in economy (777) last week.

IFE was very good. Responsive and had lots of choice.

    Food was terrible.

  5. Ah, Toronto…when it's on television, squint and pretend it's New York City.

Congrats of the sponsorship. I'll probably buy a cheap suitcase while in Thailand to check on my way back from SEA next month. Souvenirs, Vietnamese coffee, and some Bangkok exclusive 7-11 snacks won't all fit in my carry on.

I have a flight next week on SQ's A350-900 ULR. I expect some weird looks from the crew when I change into my AA First pajamas. I sure hope my food is better than what was on your flight. It doesn't matter the airline, SFO based catering is hit or miss.

  6. same look i got from flight attendant when i asked for amneity kit for a flight from HKG to YVR recently. Feel like they are keeping the amenity kits to sell to other people after their shift is over.

  7. kevin, u said everything was average, then why is the score still so high at 82, thats an A 🙂
Maybe u r too king with ur scoring. I would have given this 60+ if this is indeed average.
If i use ur scoring system, i would put this:
Pre flight and ground 12/20 (That lounge was soooo drab, ive been there many times, its just old and doesnt compete with AC's own new lounges.
Food looks bad, but if its edible, id be generous and give it a pass 11/20

U r too nice kevin! lol

  8. Kevin how does this compare to its fellow Star Alliance partner United Airlines Polaris? If you put this alongside the East Asian partners of United you would have seen this result BR🇹🇼 Royal Laurel Class = TG🇹🇭 Royal Silk Class SQ🇸🇬 Raffles Class = NH🇯🇵 Business Class = OZ🇰🇷 Business class = CA🇨🇳 Business 🇨🇦AC Signature Class > UA🇺🇲 Polaris

  9. You described AC to the tee. They are not the best, but they are kind of what you can expect.

Here in Canada, people like to complain about AC but compared to American airlines like AA, Delta, etc, they always choose AC. Kind of like the saying "It might be a piece of sh*t, but it is our piece of sh*t.'

  10. I’ve only taken Air Canada once on a short hop from YVR to YEG.
I wish CP Air is still in existence to compete with AC.

  11. I think your title would be more appropriate for a domestic or transborder flight rather than one headed overseas. In all likelihood, your revised ticket would have been pulled from the higher award bucket and thus given you access to the Signature lounge, though the MLL receptionist would have(or should have if this was the case) referred you to the better lounge.

  12. I've flown with AC several times. They serve everything course by course normally, but you had a late flight so maybe they adjust, just like you said. My biggest problem with this seat is that it's hard to sleep on the side, there isn't enough vertical space for the legs. Everything else was perfectly fine. Not amazing, but I'd still say above average.

  13. I have a soft spot for AC as its my country's flag carrier and my first biz experience was with them. After flying other business class products i think AC's business class is like the baseline for a "good" business class product its smack dab in the middle or, just as you said; Average. Its a solid B grade biz. Thanks for another great report Kevin.

  14. NGL I thought Air Canada's Signature Class was their First Class XD

Seat looks ok, but the food seemed really disappointing for a business class product based on your review, on both meals no less. Bedding seemed quite mediocre as well, with the sleeping pillow being a bit smaller than what I would have expected (more squarish rather than rectangular shaped).

I am curious why you seem so impressed with a handle in the middle of the luggage bag the way that Level 8 has it?
My current luggage has it as well, but its on the narrower side of the bag and not on the wider side.

  15. Imagine you've paid CAD$4,000 for that flight . You're lucky you used your points but even that I'm sure your regretting using your points on AC , I know I did. On my flight, the food was not the same but it was tasteless . Service sucks , FA don't like to be bothered and not friendly at all they always have some kind of attitude. Mattress pad like a thin sheet of paper don't mention the amenity kit.
Anyhow I travel with them on domestic flights for work but for international flights, I always look for a better options even if I'm using points, unless they are a lot cheaper but that doesn't happen very often.

  16. lol nice Rush reference…..since your in Canada. Fun fact: The song YYZ by Rush was inspired by the airport and the rhythm is Morse Code for YYZ

  17. I really dislike reverse herring bone seats, i like to look out of the window for stretches of the flight!

  18. A very fair rating for a rather average experience. For me, the food offerings get a higher priority, so I wouldn't have given 82 points.
Great to see you inching closer to 100K well deserved subscribers, Kevin.

  19. Have to agree it's just OK. I flew from Vancouver to Zurich for my Birthday and had a horrific flight and when I got back to Canada I wrote a 3 page letter explaining what happened and did not even get a response. After that I fly anything But Scare Canada . Even though two of my best friends work for this Airline I wont ever fly with them again . 😊

  20. I'm retired, so I don't have the super heavy flying schedule I once did, but 20-25 years ago, I did a little consulting to Air Canada and learned enough about them to avoid them like the plague for flights in and out of Canada. Back then, and maybe still today, Air Canada had four strong unions who were not on the best terms with management or with each other. And that showed up in the passenger experience. They were expensive, and still are, from what I've heard. You can do better. Much better.

  21. 82/100 is the waay too good if you follow the video. For busines class food looks more like 5/20. I mean you dont pay thousands to eat in Burger King. Other is nothing impressive, I'd give 60/100 at max as business class. Compare to Qatar of Air France.
