Construction of Sorakuen began around 1885 and was completed at the end of the Meiji period.

The garden, located on a 20,000 m2 site, is a Japanese garden in the Chisen Kaiyushiki style, where visitors can cross stepping stones and stone bridges to view streams and waterfalls. The Sotetsuen Garden, a large camphor tree said to be 500 years old, and maple leaves in autumn are also magnificent.

Kaiyushiki Teien” refers to a style of Japanese garden where visitors actually walk around the garden, rather than viewing it from inside the building.
