Hi everyone (^ ^) Today I am traveling to Narai-juku, a post town that retains much of the old townscape in Japan from about 400 years ago. It seems like it snowed around here yesterday. I’m looking forward to seeing Narai-juku in the snow as it seems to have a nice atmosphere as well.

It was a post town on the highway (Nakasendo) connecting Tokyo and Kyoto that was built about 400 years ago. It once flourished with travelers passing through on the highway. I arrived in front of Narai Station. This area has been selected as a nationally important preservation district for groups of traditional buildings. Let’s go.

Wow! This is amazing✨ An impressive old townscape that makes me feel like I have traveled back in time This beautiful townscape stretches for about 1 kilometer. It is the longest post station in Japan. Did travelers in the past also see this scenery?

The charm of Narai-juku lies not only in its preservation, but also in the fact that people still live in the town today. Let’s go to the restaurant. This is a popular Soba shop. It’s heard that there are many fans who come from far away. You can feel the history from the building.

It has a wonderful nostalgic atmosphere. It warms my body and soul. I will try the famous “Toji Soba.” The soup has plenty of vegetables and mushrooms! Toji Soba is a local dish that has been popular in Narai-juku for a long time. Specially selected soba noodles and strong soup with broth It’s very delicious♡

Let’s take a walk around town. There are a variety of shops lined up, and it’s fun just walking around. What you can see in front of you is “Shizume Shrine.” It is said that this is the shrine where people once worshiped when an epidemic spread in Narai-juku. It’s a quiet and beautiful shrine.

There is a very sacred atmosphere. Let’s go worship. When walking down the streets of Narai-juku, restaurants, souvenir shops, guesthouses, etc. stand out. However, there are many shrines and temples located a little further back. This is “Chosenji Temple.”

Chosenji Temple was the lodging place for a group of people who carried Kyoto Uji tea for the Shogun (political leader) in Edo (Tokyo). “Taihoji Temple” can be seen in the background. This temple is dedicated to the god of good fortune. I have walked a long way. Let’s take a break now.

This is a shop that sell handmade sweets and lacquerware (Japanese traditional crafts). Wow, it’s such a relaxing atmosphere♡ I think I’ll have some cake. Let’s go to the second floor. Narai-juku overlooking from the window is also nice. I ordered an orange cheesecake and tea set. Cake with a gentle and refreshing taste

It’s so delicious that I want to eat another one! Next, cross the railroad crossing and head to another location. This is “Kiso Ohashi,” a bridge made entirely of Japanese cypress. It is one of the largest wooden bridges in Japan without piers. The sparkling Narai River and its murmuring waters soothe me.
