Entry into Japan is always changing, So, here’s a  guide for quick and easy entry into the country: So, let’s uncover Japan’s entry requirments   and crucial things to know to help you  start planning your dream trip to Japan! Setting up some of these features before  entering Japan and knowing these crucial

Points will not only make your trip hassle  free but will also give you peace of mind. But Before we get into the video, please  remember to like and consider subscribing,   these videos take many hours to put together  and your support will help the channel grow. So, What are Japan’s entry requirements?

Currently 70 countries can access Japan  without a visa, for short term stay. Most countries including the USA, UK,   most European Nations and Australia  are automatically given 90 days entry. However, Indonisia and Thailand are  currently allowed 15 days entry.  Brunei, 14 days.  and for United Arab Emirates and  Qatar passport holders its 30 days.

Your passport needs to be valid during the  duration of your trip and if transiting   through other countries those countries  might have their own validity period! Always check the official entry requirements   of your country for changes  and updates before travel. *Note that if your country does  not have visa waver with Japan,

You may still be able to enter but will  require to obtain a visa beforehand. — I highly recommend that you register for the  Visit Japan web. It’s an online entry portal   that allows you to register your customs  and emigration entry information that is

Traditionally filled in by hand on the  aeroplane or at arrival in the airport. Although doing this online is not compulsory  and you can still fill in the paper version.   Registering on the web portal before your  trip will not only give you peace of mind

Before travel but will make entry  into Japan faster and hassle free. Take note that there have been  reports of fake websites and apps,   I’ll leave the link to the official  portal in the video description. You can register your details as soon as you have  your flight number and first accommodation booked.

However, if travelling  after the 25th January 2024:   there is a slight change and a single  unified QR Code will be provided instead   of the current separate customs and  immigration Qr codes. therefore,   suggest you wait to register after this date. *Using Visit Japan web will also give you access

To a Qr Code for Tax free shopping  that you’ll register once arrived What do you need during your Trip? Although credit cards are accepted in large  stores, hotels, and restaurants. Cash is   still a necessity in many situations like  mom and pap stores and street food vendors.

You’ll definitely want some loose change for  those gacha, claw games and arcade machines! My Pro tip here is get your hands on an IC card,  which is a rechargeable contactless smart card   used mainly for public transportation but also  accepted across multiple venders and even many

Vending machines! IC cards are a convenient  alternative to cash or traditional tickets. It’s important to note each region  has their own version but they are   all interchangeable and can be  used the same way across Japan. If arriving in Tokyo you’ll be picking  up a Suica or a Pasmo card whilst if

Starting your trip in Kyoto or Osaka it’s ICOCA. There are two type of cards Visitor versions that expire after 28 days and  do not allow you to refund your final balance  And “normal” versions that usually expire after 10   years of last use. Which allow you to  refund your final balance and deposit.

Due to a microchip shortage  getting your hands on some   of these cards can sometimes be a little  challenging and always subject to change. So, Where can you purchase Pasmo or Suica cards: *Currently correct info as from  20 Jan 2024 (subject to change) For those landing in Tokyo: Pasmo  Passport is currently available at

Haneda and Narita airports and across  various stations in Tokyo. However,   Welcome suica is only available  at Haneda airport terminal 3. And if you want to get yourself a normal suica  card which is valid for 10 years and allows you   to refund it’s deposit before departure.  Subject to change and daily availability.

These are available from the JR EAST travel  centre (the same place you get your JR Pass)   at either TOKYO , Shinagawa , Shibuya,  Shinjuku, Ikebukuru or Ueno stations,   head to the JR pass section(NOT THE normal ticket  booth) and ask an attendant for a suica card. Payment is only by cash

I’ll also leave a link to the official information  in the video description just in case things do   change in the future. (or even though I personally  tried and tested this out you don’t believe me) If you are on an iphone I hightly recommend  you get yourself a digital suica card.

Simply head to the apple wallet app,  press the plus on the top corner   and then add a Travel card. Suica  should be available under “Japan” Once you’ve topped it up using apple pay,   the card will automatically be enabled  and ready to use. Just like a physical

Version. It can be used in exactly the same way  at train gates, stores and vending machines etc. Its important to note that some people in the  USA have reported issues topping up using VISA   cards. However, there are reports of work  arounds such as creating an apple cash card

(which can be done in the settings app under  wallet & apple pay) or using a currency card   such as wise or Revolut and creating virtual  apple pay card to top up the digital suica. I personally have never had issues creating or   topping up (other than when the  system is undergoing maintanence)

Let us know if you’ve had problems and  found solutions in the comment section!  — Next up is a Data connection. Having access to up to date maps and  translation will really make traveling   Japan so much easier and give you peace of mind. This is why my biggest tip of all is to make sure

You have access to a data connection  such as pocket wifi, or a data sim. This will mean that you’ll always have up  to date maps and point to point navigation   available with google maps, translate,  search up opening and closing times of

Stores and restaurants and even allow  you to make online bookings on the go!   And not to forget access to social media  to show of how amazing your Japan trip is! I usually use my Sakura mobile pocket wifi to  check train times, navigate around the area,

Research information whilst on location  and for translation when needed. So, Please consider using my affiliate  link in the video description or Qr Code. You’ll receive a trusted product  and I’ll receive a small commission   at no additional cost to you! And  you’ll be helping out the channel! And when it comes to navigating.

My tip for nervous first-time travellers in Tokyo  is to start off using the Yamanote line. A loop   line that covers a lot of Tokyo’s major spots,  This line runs in two directions meaning that   if you do miss a stop or get lost it will  eventually loop back to where you started!

— On the topic of being connected Here are some of the apps I recommend you set up: The obvious ones are Google maps  and Google translate or similar   For communication in Japan, if you are wanting to   make connections with locals you meet,  you might want to instal LINE which is   a messaging app similar to Whatsapp or  telegram and is widely used in Japan. And I highly recommend you also install an  earthquake alert app such as Yurikuru call.

If you are on an iphone you can also change your  region to Japan and once you arrive you’ll be able   to turn on Emergency alerts by scrolling to the  very bottom of Notifications in the settings app. I was actually in Japan on the 1st of  January when the NOTO earthquake hit.

Luckily I was in Tokyo and although I  did feel it. It was the Yurikuru call   app that alerted me to it. Even giving me  a count down to take cover. I now totally   understand how having the correct app  installed could potentially save lives!

Here are some additional notable things you  need to consider when travelling to Japan: In the Past the JR Pass was a no brainer,   it allowed travel using JR trains  including the Shinkansen bullet train   at a very affordable price. But things have  changed and with the recent price increase,

This pass is less likely to be an affordable  option for you and will likely only serve those   who are going to do some heavy duty travelling  such as moving location nearly every other day. Therefore, before embarking on purchasing  a JR pass for your trip, you should use

A Japan rail pass calculator and compare  individual ticket prices against the pass. It’s also important to note that if  travelling with large luggage that   might not fit on the overhead shelf on  the shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka   or Kyoto for example. You’ll need  to reserve the seats at the front

Or the back of each train cart that has a  special area to place over sized luggage. This is why I always recommend you  forward your luggage from location   to location. This can usually be done from  the hotels reception and is worth the price,   for hassle free no luggage travel!

You’ll need to inform the  hotel you are staying at,   the date you want your luggage to arrive  at the next hotel and plan accordingly. For example I had to drop off my luggage before  1pm for my lugguage to arrive the following   morning in Osaka from Tokyo. —

When it comes to booking hotels and accommodation,  I highly recommend you start booking early rather   than later to secure the best prices  and availability in areas of interest. And if you do know your itinerary and sights  of interest, some might require reservations,

So I’d personally reserve these  early on so that you don’t miss out. Some locations might not require  reservations but having one will   guarantee a successful trip and less disappoint. Locations I recommend you reserve include: Parks such as Disney, Universal and Ghibli  Observation decks suck as Sky tree or Shibuya Sky

Themed restaurants and cafes  such as the Pokemon cafe  Museums such as Team labs  boderless and Team labs planets  And Cultural experiences, such  as Katana classes or workshops Note that some activities are so popular  that their tickets go on sale months before,

And sell out very fast so check to see  when each locations tickets go on sale,   and set an alarm to purchase your tickets! So there you have it. A comprehensive guide  to get you prepared for your trip to Japan.

  1. Thank you for this information! Our trip is coming up in March, and your videos were a big help😊

  2. hmmm,… it would be easier if foreigners just did not visit Japan (^_^) … though guest workers seem ok (except to my relatives) … I think having currency is actually good advice … in the backward countryside, sometimes some train stations cannot accept SUICA so it is only paper ticket.

  3. A question if I may: it seems that there are two smartwatches which are compatible with digital SUICA, but only the version sold in Japan: if I wanted to "get my hands" on a "Galaxy Watch6" (Osaifu-Keitai compatible) where should I go?

  4. What happen if my trip to Japan I'm going to arrive 25th at 17h, do I'm still going to be okay to use the 2 QR codes or going to change already at this date?

  5. One might just might say that Ninja Monkey is a Just In Time video creator. Now, I wouldn't say that, but I'd for sure think that. How apropos, that this video appears right when many of your viewers might need to find this knowledge, all in one spot, before they travel to Japan.運命 (shukumei).

  6. I don't understand this shortage of IC card. Welcome suica has a chipset too. So normal or welcome suica use one chipset. And for people which stay more than 28 days, they will use 2 or 3 cards, so 2 or 3 more chipsets than one normal suica.

    (sorry for my bad english)

  7. thanks for this helpful video! just a minor remark on the IC Cards: Okica used for Okinawa cannot be used outside of Okinawa Prefecture, but is nevertheless useful to have for Okinawa buses. (You can use the other Japanese IC Cards on the Naha Monorail though)

  8. I was in Osaka during the earthquake, pretty scary. My building was swaying, as were the powerpoles. Does the app predict the quakes somehow?

I did get a text from the Japanese authorities afterwards. That was nice.

  9. Visit Japan Web is a brilliant invention! I used it in April 2023 and I have never seen such efficient passport control with QR codes like this. 😀

  10. Hey Nathan, long time lurker first time commenter, just wanted to say thanks for all the tips over the years! Finally headed back to Japan for a couple of weeks at the end of this month after 4 long years, and it’s convenient that this video came out at just the right time. A little tip I’d like to share of my own is for reservations at Shibuya Sky – you can reserve 1 month in advance and they currently release the time slots at midnight JST, which is crucial if you’re aiming for a sunset time slot because these can fill up within the first 15 minutes-first hour (from my experience)

  11. Awesome video!!!!
I have a trip coming up and I really enjoyed this video. Appreciate these videos. Especially the one on the "secret suica card"!

  12. My wife and I were in Sapporo on Jan 1. Our T-Mobile international service/network got cut off right after the earthquake.

  13. Went January 2023 and covid measures were still in place and with the visit Japan web stuff already done I got out of narita in like 30-45 minutes including getting the WiFi and our bags shipped to hotel. I plan on much faster exit from haneda next week

  14. Mate, can we use WISE VISA debit card to pay for hotel accommodation? I have read online that people can use it to purchase things like using a credit card but they never mentioned about paying for hotel. Thanks.

  15. Thank you for this video!
I am having issues with my Visa and Discover credit card buying Shinkansen tickets through their official website. Do you have any tip ?
    TIA ❤

  16. For the visitjapan qr code i need to register after the 25th right? I already registered and my flight is in the 26th will the unified qr code still available?

  17. I still couldn't use Wise Canada Visa debit card in either USD or CAD to top up Suica in March, November, and December 2023 so FYI.

  18. Hi, my registration and qr code was already done so now do I need to re-start the process again after the recent changes?

  19. I heard of eSIMS of HolaFly, at great prices, and you can activate it before your flight, and when you touch down you are connected

  20. Hey Nathan. Some great tips all the time! I’m visiting first time 19 March for 3 weeks, Tokyo, Hakone, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Osaka (and 1 night back in Tokyo). I believe the JR pass would not be worth it for these journeys. In Hakone I will be getting be 2 day free pass, and haven’t reserved anything yet. What is the maximum size suitcase that will not need reservations for Shinkansen?

  21. Hi Nathan I'm excited for my trip and kinda nervous to start booking everything, currently waiting for flights to lower their prices for the dates I want (almost close to 2k) but your videos have help me so much keep up with lates update in Japan and things I have to keep in mind.

  22. I'm going Feb 8-23 but I don't know if i need the 7 day JR pass or the 14 day pass. its a big price difference but if you're traveling every other day, then it won't be 7 straight calendar days I would use JR. Landing Haneda, I want to go (in no order) Tokyo, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Osaka/Kyoto/Nara (and I was told to devote 4-6 days just for that)

  23. I'll be leaving Rio to Tokyo on jan 25th and arrive in tokyo on 27th. In this case, is it worth to fill online papers during the flight to get changes advantages after 25th?

  24. Wait so pasmo can't use in the osaka/kansai area? The last time I used JR Pass when in Osaka/kyoto so I think, I only topping up the Pasmo when the JR pass expire in tokyo.

  25. been to japan countless times, i only speak english and mandarin but i’ve only been using english throughout my trips to japan without much issue . never had to use any translation apps

  26. we will be in nagoya next week. I am unable to get my usa apple i14 suica to link with my usa visa card? please help
