AUTUMN DAY TRIP TO NAGANO | Visiting the famous Monkey Park | ft. Karuizawa Prince shopping plaza

Seeing the famous Japanese Macaques in Nagano has always been on our list to visit but never had the chance. And as this was our fourth visit to Japan, we had to finally do it! But is it worth a visit without the famous, catalogue winter look?

Short answer – yes!

Things we recommend:

⭐ If you can, spend more than one day in Nagano – if we had an extra day or two in our Japan trip, we would have stayed overnight in Nagano because there are so many other things to see and visit here like:
— Togakushi Shrine Okusha with the avenue of 400 year old cedar trees
— Explore more of Karuizawa and visit Shiraito Waterfall
— The mountainous Kamikochi
Plus so much more outside of Nagano.

⭐ Wear comfortable shoes – the walk to the Jigokudani Monkey park is about 40 minutes with small inclines and some steps. If you do visit here in the winter, I have read that it can be a treacherous walk on the snow.
⭐ Visit the park early – we took the very first bus from Nagano Station to the bus stop and even then there were people already there at the park. And if you want to take lots of pictures around the ‘pond’ section where the monkeys swim, it can get a little crowded.

We’ll leave the link of the website we found super helpful which provides the bus schedules from Nagano station to the Jigokudani Monkey Park bus stop.
