During the Edo period Magome-juku (馬籠宿) was the 43rd of the 69 towns along the Nakasendō road connecting Edo to Kyoto. It was also the last of eleven towns along the Kisoji road, which would later become part of Nakasendō, that runs through the Kiso Valley.

It was winter and off-season, so there weren’t many tourists. Magome-juku is a stone-paved slope with buildings lined up on both sides.

Souvenir shops line both sides of the stone pavement, and even houses that used to be businesses have the original names written on their doors, allowing the past and present to coexist with modern life. There is post office. The water wheel was frozen, but it was still working.

The largest mountain that can be seen from the observation deck is Mt. Ena(2191m).
