Yeah, spot on about the masks around 21 minutes in. I don't want to wear a mask, but I do wear a mask when I travel. Most people will not care, but there will be 15% or so of people who see mask-less people and don't like it. Generally, these tend to be older people, and they don't like it when Japanese people do it either. The farther into Iwate you go, the more this is the case. But if you're a foreigner, sometimes they'll just laser focus on something you did/are doing, and it triggers 'foreigners are bad/act badly'. So I'm careful, and I always wear a mask, even though I don't need to, or want to.
If I walk into a restroom, and there's pee all over the seat, I usually try to clean it up a little, even though I didn't do it, because I know there's a chance that the next person will think, "That foreigner did this – they don't respect anything…", etc. There is just a percentage of the population that wants to think that way, and it is unfortunate. I do care what Japanese people think, not so much of me personally, but about foreigners. I want to give a positive impression. I've seen good and bad behavior from locals and foreigners. People are people, and there's not much you can do about the bad. I can't tell my contemporaries, "Dude, you should wear a mask still", because it's like, I'm not your dad. But we are guests. My philosophy is to show respect.
