SEKI Traverse 2023 Part 1

Part 1 of the most beautiful, adventurous hike I’ve taken to date. We put this route together so that we could experience parts of the Sierra within Kings Canyon and Sequoia Nat’l Parks that most never go into. Follow us on-trail, off-trail, and into relatively untraveled locations to experience some of the most beautiful places that exist on this planet… I call it the SEKI Traverse.

  1. I did SEKI in 2021 clockwise and it was incredible! I wish more people (kinda) knew that this was an alternative to the John Muir Trail and easier to get permits for. Plus so much more solitude! Loved every step!

  2. Hey John, that was one for the books that is for sure. I assume that was little Avery from "Range of Light Fame"? Time sure flies. I have to say, this one hit all the marks for me, Laughs, memories, longing etc. That intro with the route review made my jaw drop, then seeing it unfold was great editing. I was stoked to see that part of the HST again. That was my first hike in 2017 and still my favorite. Now that I have been hiking a while I realize how lucky I was to make Whitney on my first trip out. LOL I see they rebuilt that Bearpaw Ranger station. I've had some tough hikes since (going out not fit enough) and sure had a hard time. I love seeing those rarely seen trails you have the skill set to travel to. BTW, that picture on Colby pass was awesome! haha Also, I wanted to say that the morning of day 6 when you were reviewing the previous day and doing voice over of some of clips of that day really added to the ability to kind of relate to how you guys felt or your struggle of the day. It is a editing technique that really works. You come across great on "video diary" and are great at getting your emotion to come through the screen that way. Most vids I see that people do that don't come across genuine like you do. I about choked up watching you walk away from your family. One thing I know now though, is I usually regret when I bail early, but there are other times I wanted to but didn't, and I never regret pushing through. Can't wait for part 2. P.S. Note to self: September sun cups are no fucking joke. haha

  3. Thank you for showing me the beauty of the wilderness. I just watched 9 Days on the Edge for probably the third time since I discovered it in 2016. I love your videos and choice of music. Happy trails to you.

  4. I fell in love with Sierras so many years ago when I did the High Sierra Trail and Mt. Whitney. It is what got me started into hiking! Seeing parts of the HST brought back so many great memories! I love how you capture these amazing adventures you take. That route is absolutely amazing! I always talk about going back to the Sierras and this makes me want it even more.

  5. Can't wait for #2. Love your stuff John. I feel your joy, your pain and emotions. Like I am there! Da Music Rocks!!!! Lol

  6. I’ll say it again & again…John, you make the best JMT/Sierra docuvlogs! Not to mention a killer soundtrack to boot. Can’t wait to get back up the Sierra’s this Summer.

  7. Another awesome video. thanks for all the work you put into these and also for sharing them with us all.

  8. You’re an amazing artist, John. As others pointed out, the scenery and the choreography were epic, but my favorite parts were the human emotions of you watching your family depart and the wee hour bombing by Mother Nature. The former would have had me shed a few tears while the latter would have had me hard puckering. Can’t wait for part 2.

  9. my dude does it again…this is definitely one for the books my friend…i would love to see a map of this epic trek..as always cant wait for the next mad scientist trek 🙂 maybe like a 7 dayer in yellowstone or the tetons?

  10. Epic video. I have only been on the “main trails” in the Sierras. I have only seen most of what you are doing on a map. I look forward to doing similar loops in the future. Keep up the fantastic work.

  11. O man, I'm pretty sure I'm the guy that issued your permit for this trip. There couldn't be a more epic trip, beautiful captures John. Such a good year for wildflowers and flowing water, Hamilton basin was looking fantastic! I appreciate the perspective you give, I know walking back to get the camera is a lot of extra hiking. Thanks for the video cant wait for part 2 and hope to see you next season!

  12. Great to see both familiar and new sights on this one. The approach and climb of Forester from the south is one of my favorites. I always say Donald Down's name out loud as I pass and tell him is sacrifice is not forgotten. One spot you should try to spend the night at one time is Colby Lake. Sunset and Sunrise there made for a spectacular campsite. When I came up Cloud Canyon in 2019 in August, it was so wet I spent as much time in the water as out, so I stopped changing out shoes. It was pointless. Those crossings on the way up were at the top of my knees. What a beautiful hike though.

  13. Fantastic!! Great camera work 👏🏼👏🏼. Thanks for sharing your trip. Looking forward to part 2 👍🏻👍🏻
