Japan Airlines on Fire | Collision with Coast Guard Airplane

02/JAN/2024
A Japan Airlines Airbus A350-941 (JA13XJ) performing flight from Sapporo RJCC to Tokyo Haneda RJTT was touching down on runway 34R when the aircraft impacted a Japanese Coast Guard Dash-8 and burst into flames on the runway.

All people onboard evacuated.
5 of the 6 occupants of the Coast Guard aircraft received fatal injuries. The Captain survived but received serious injuries.

Any audio prior to the incident was recorded in such bad quality that it’s nearly impossible to extract clear communications from either side. JAL516 did receive a clearance to land from ATC, and so they did readback. The Coast Guard aircraft had been instructed to hold short of the runway at intersection C2.

Information to be updated as more official reports release.

Did you watch the news of the Japanese airline's plane on fire? The body looks like it's made of plastic. Why is it so easy for Boeing to catch fire around the fuselage? What makes a plane's fuselage not fireproof?

  3. Props to the cabin crew for a textbook evacuation but this kind of accident shouldn't happen in 2024. Even with a clearance to land, the flight crew still has the responsibility to visually confirm the runway is clear of any obstacles or conflicting traffic before landing. RIP to the crewmembers who perished.

  4. A true tragedy admist another tragedy for Japan’s start of 2024. My most genuine condolences to all involved in this incident and the Ishikawa earthquake🌲. RIP to the 5 JCG crew, the first hull-lost A350, and the Dash 8 😢.

  5. Looks like the JAL flight had FUEL IN WINGS to make return flight. Perhaps that protocol could be updated to land nearn empty always, and refuel every stop?

  6. given how many near misses have occurred this past year with planes sitting on the runway waiting to take off while another is landing, this doesn't surprise me.

  7. It is amazing that everyone on the A350 got off unharmed. Kudos to the JAL crew for what they did in the evacuation. Condolences to the crew on board the coast guard aircraft.

  8. How in the world can anyone understand what these people are saying??
The English is so bad and there is so much static that it seems like an accident waiting to happen. I mean people's lives are relying on this communication. How can it be so bad in 2024?

  9. Miracle! The all passengers is survive the accident, but the DHC-8 plane its just a 1 survivor and 5 Fatalities… R.I.P 😢😢

  10. I am wondering if what I saw is correct that the evacuation was only through Door 1L and 1R. If that is the case the evacuation is even more extraordinary

  11. Trouble after Trouble. Let's Pray for Japan's Earthquake Victims and to all those passengers on flight which collided with a Coast Guard plane. It's very sad to hear such news on New year's Day.

  12. There was a Stop Bar Light in C5, signaled the entry to the runway, but according to NOTAM, it has been out of service for inspection since 12/27…

  13. Incredible to believe nothing like this hasn’t happened before with pathetic ATC direction in almost unintelligible English, which is of course the International Standard for ATC

  14. It's incredible that the A350 still had all 3 gears in tact and operable AND that the pilot still got it down flat on the gears without tipping a wing or veering off the runway after that collision.

  15. The people of Japan are strong bunch. They triumph over so many hard times. The 2011 tsunami is a great example of that. They went through the Americans using their women and children to test the effects of 2 nukes being dropped on civilian population intentionally. My deepest condolences to the families and victims in this crash and the earthquake, i hope 2024 vastly improves for you

  16. The fact that the 350 ran over the dash 8 and managed to stay intact really is amazing.

  17. To VAS AVIATION :You should consider the radio telephony as fake. The pilot was not ordered to go around because the tower could not see the Dash-8 at all and the JAL pilot has an American accent. But all JAL pilots are japanese
