The Underground Nightlife | Nagoya | Destination Adventure

Sometimes the best way to find “off the beaten path” locations in another country, is simply to just start walking. Intentionally get lost for a whole day, then gps your way back, and you will be amazed what you will find. I hit the city with zero intentions or plans, but I found so much beauty and so many little gems I would have never otherwise found. The temples and shrines were beautiful, and the energy was so powerful. Meeting Nathan was an interesting surprise, and such a treat to get the opportunity to hear about someones story in a foreign land. It can be difficult to feel welcome in a foreign country if you cant speak the language, so finding an english speaker was a real treat.

There is a lively nightlife in Japan, basically every night. Weekends are definitely a little busier, but there is a good time to be had every night of the week as well. The required workload for most of the population in Japan is unfortunately very heavy, which is why the nightlife is so alive. People need to relax and cut loose after the work day, because unfortunately most employers will not allow vacation days.

I not much of a party animal, but this type of socializing, drinking and eating was such a fun way to enjoy the night. If you are planning a trip to Japan, do yourself a big favour and try to find an area without a high concentration of tourists. Then you can enjoy the authentic experience, as opposed to an experience catered to the tourist.

It’s been quite a long time since I’ve been on a fixed time frame for a video project about halfway through my main Japan video very happy with it but there is so much to see here Em’s at work today so I think we’re going to go out

And I’m just going to show you guys a little bit of what it’s like being in Japan I’ve converted my camera to an absolute Vlog Powerhouse So today we’re going total Vlog Style staying at the Travel Lodge it is right downtown ngoya city so we have access to pretty much everything you’d want in the city paid 300 and change for four nights super good deal one really interesting thing about being in Japan you can buy basically anything you want and a bunch

Of stuff you don’t want from a vending machine so we’re going to go and see what we can find today The language here is very complicated and I was fortunate enough my second last contract on board was a 3month Japanese Charter World Cruise 100% Japanese speaking guests so my Japanese speaking is horrendously bad but I did get to do some culture training before that contract and it’s important to know

Here because the culture is drastically different they’re very open to Travelers which is really nice you’ll be welcomed basically everywhere but it’s important to know what is acceptable and not even little things like crossing the street or what side you walk on of course they’re they drive on the opposite side

Here so you walk on the opposite side it’s important to educate yourself a little bit on that before you come here most of all you’ll be welcome with open arms Japan’s a pretty small country with a very dense population so parking of course is a challenge and they’ve come

Up with some creative ways to circumvent this they have these car rotisseries and car elevators it’s really cool we’re just coming up on one I’ll show You it’s almost lunchtime here quite hungry there’s a sushi train behind me it’s all in Japanese Em’s been a huge help with this kind of stuff I’m going to try and navigate it on my Own you order through this screen right here and then I’m table 16 and then it should come through on the plate as table 16 I ordered one item to test if it works I’ll order some more I got the apparently the proper way to dunk in the soy sauce is to go upside down I always lose my fish when I do it so I go rice first I don’t think it really matters M I’ve done two rounds of ordering off of the tablet I’m pretty

Sure I can just grab something right off this belt I’m going for it see if anybody screams at me so far so good paying in the restaurant is very easy they use the same numbers as us it’s basically just divide by 100 that’ll give you your approximate Canadian

Conversion and they come around when you want the bill they just count the plates and that’s how much you owe each plate is worth a different amount that whole meal for me was $13 pretty good all right let’s take some vending machine baby steps here’s a pretty typical

One similar to what you would find in North America here’s the prices everything blue is cold red is hot vending machine of straight sriacha found a vending machine seems questionable sells cigarettes this morning Emmy and I during breakfast Googled the location for some interesting vending machines

It’s taken me on a wild goose chase I’m a little bit concerned I’m going into to the red light district I don’t know what that says up there but I did find some interesting vending machines I think there’s flying fish inside these bottles oh do not drink this is a soup stock

Okay here’s an interesting vending machine I think it might be vinegar this is medication I believe something to help you asleep maybe ready to finally try one of these vending machines I don’t want to get the Flying Fish juice I just want a coffee cuz it’s getting cold out going to go

With a golden drip it’s a 110 Yen A110 it’s $110 trying one of these hot ones cuz I want to see how hot it is it’s actually I wouldn’t say it’s hot but it’s more than warm smells Good tastes great Actually Ah what a real treat for you there’s a store coming up here of ridiculous awesomeness it’s called Don kote we’ll go in for a little Tour I guess the last two floors are just Food there’s a restaurant behind me with the world’s smallest door not hungry but I got to try that door it’s not a restaurant it’s a gift shop door was equally as cool either way the sign says no drinking and no smoking but it seems like filming is

Okay it’s a beautiful Shrine right here right downtown I have found another Shrine going to go for a Walk H certainly didn’t expect to find temples and shrines today especially not here in the Heart of the City it’s almost as if these shrines were here and the city has been built and expanded around that it’s been so nice to be welcomed in to film and photograph in these places

Photography and video it’s a lot more accepted in Japanese culture so typically you wouldn’t be able to film in a religious place but everyone’s kind of just welcomed me in and smiled this has been a delightful surprise and the feeling in these places is so Strong [Applause] I think the biggest contributing factor that made me fall in love with traveling is meeting people which is a big challenge here in ngoya because this is not a tourist destination by any means in Japan so finding somebody that speaks English is a big challenge I enjoy it to

An extent because I’ve been stuck in North America for the past four years but really understanding the culture is difficult when you can’t talk to anybody I just met a gentleman from the United States that’s been living here and he was kind enough to let me do a very

Quick impromptu interview I’d like to share it with You I have been here in Japan about 45 years I felt the call of God on my life when I was about 26 years old so I packed up my bags and I came put my clothes in a big barrel and had my books in a frying pan I was single you know

Didn’t meet my wife till I got here so it was a big transition I think I kind of fitted in right away you know I wasn’t really homesick or anything I really felt the calling and made friends in the church in Yokohama and yeah so then I met my wife

So started feeling more like Home I also have my son and some grandchildren in Norway and my daughter in Alaska and then another daughter here with grandchildren so we have three continents kind of I think it gives you a broader perspective on humanity and the situation of course in Japan Japan is quite different than

America uh and you know as a pastor you know we counsel with people and you know all kinds of situations especially with the homeless life and death a lot of things and um so we learn you know the Japanese way of doing things yeah which is sometimes better than the American way actually

It’s a pretty safe country here so you don’t have to worry too much about pick pocketing and stuff but of course you know you take off your shoes when you go in the house and you have to learn to wash yourself outside of the uro before you go in and different things like

That but uh yeah after a while you kind of learn the Japanese etiquette yeah I’m not a religious person but kindness to me speaks volumes and that man right there has a heart full of kindness feel pretty honored to be able to share it with you the sun is just starting to set and the city is coming alive restaurants are opening shops are opening and Emmy will

Be off work in about an hour we’ll tonight we’ll go out enjoy some drinks and some food show you guys kind of the night life and do some I think they’re called Tapas should be a good Time here we go hitting the city earlier I called it Tapas in Japan it’s called isak I’m going to bring bring this big ridiculous Vlog camera either we’re going to get in trouble or we’re not so the rest of the night might be on a GoPro we’ll just find Out wow station look at this have a drink if you’re wondering what the rumbly noise is we’re underneath the subway station there’s a whole strip of isaka down here come SC coming hot sck what is this C intestine kimchi ch Ch and kimchi the flavor is great I have to go down down down this spot we’re at everything they have is related to chicken stock and he’s drinking hot sake and they just they said when you drink 2/3 of it they’ll fill it up with chicken stock in the sake

I did give it a try highly do not [Laughter] Recommend we get to choose one drink each two drinks two drinks each oh two drinks each and three dishes of of the restaurant’s choice for $12 $12 each yeah $24 what does it do extends to the second drink so now they they know that it’s our second drink I’m not stumbling you’re stumbling if they want to get on the train from here they have to pass through here with a lot of tempting yeah

I know it was too tempting we never made it to the train are you ready for one more tempting just kidding It’s no secret that Japanese people are some of the hardest working but with that of course comes the need to cut loose nights like this have basically become a small part of Japanese culture but the best part they’ve nearly mastered the art of reducing a hangover

And at 32 years old that’s something I am beginning to Value the night ends with Sushi Miso soup and ramen which is maybe not a cure all but it certainly helped and good thing too because we’ve got a lot more to see next week we’re putting ngoya in the rear

View in search of some beauty and some history thanks for watching Everybody so where the new kids L town a breaking walls blowing Bridges un leaving Rubble like a breing ball I’m going ahead call us outla M cuz we tell the roof off yeah I better get your umbrella cuz this wind’s going to kill you I better run for some shelter cuz we’re blowing down this house we are Hricane

  1. Dustin, hi from Calgary thanks for showing me a culture not North American especially Japan which has interested me for years. I applaud your ease with global travel., thanks. Travel safe Happy New Year to you.
{an episode about your cruise ship story really interests me )

  2. Thankyou Dustin. Great vid. Quite the editing into this one. Japan is clean and nice but the wife and I couldn't take the food. As a marine aquarium keeper for the last forty years that food would be like eating my pets or licking out a skimmer cup ๐Ÿคฎ. Nice to see ya enjoying yourself. You deserve it. Cheers Man ! And Happy New Year to you and your family. ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

  3. We have a Don Quijote market on Oahu, everyone on the island takes it for granted that this market has so much magical stuff!! I like to go to the Japanese and Korean sections and buy a mystery item, I scan it at home to translate. Sometimes I get lucky and sometimes I am baffled. Love this store!!

  4. Was there for work in the mid โ€˜90s. Enjoyed every aspect of the country and culture. Would recommend it to anyone willing to travel to a different part of the world.

  5. My son was stationed in the navy at yokasuka Japan and loved Japan. My uncle was in the same spot 60years earlier in the us navy – of course not so nice. Luckily my son met his wife or he would have reenlisted if he could stay in Japan. Way too far away for mom!

  6. Hope you and Ami are OK?! Are you still in Japan for the earthquake? I hope you update us soon. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

Also, a report from Osaka, Japan: "Large areas of Toyama and Ishikawa prefectures were affected, and a large fire is currently raging in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, which was particularly hard hit. 10. Dustin I know this video is from a couple of days ago but Iโ€™m just praying youโ€™re okay after the earthquake that just happened in Japan. Praying not only for you but all the people that were affected by this act of nature. Please take care ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

  11. Heard about the earthquake in Japan, and hope you are ok! Let us know? also keep in mind, that when you phone out internationally, you'd probably have better chances, than making a call locally, do take care of yourself Dustin, Hope all is well, Happy New Year!

  12. Hello everyone, thank you for the comments and messages checking up on me. Things are good on the DA front. Very tragic what is happening, and my thoughts are on the people struggling.

  13. LOVE how you changed up your music choices and editing style to suit big city Nagoya vs. the wild Canadian and American north! Mad respect for all that you do; the cinematography, the unique perspectives, and the respect you always pay to the places and people you meet. You're hands down one of my favourite YouTubers!

  14. Thank you for taking us to Japan, truly fascinating. Especially the hot/cold vending machines. Happy new year Dustin!

  15. @ 13:28. "I'm not a religious person, but for me, kindness speaks volumes, and that man has a lot of kindness". Well right back atcha Dustin! Really that was a very full circle statement…if that makes sense.
