We’re visiting my husband’s grandparents’ house in the Netherlands, which is our annual event. This year, we are returning their home with our son♪ It’s hard to believe that this is his first time traveling on an ICE (high-speed train). Contrary to how nervous we are, he seems totally fine.

Since it was a weekday, first class was kind of empty. We can’t get to the town where his grandparents live without changing trains many times. So his uncle and aunt pick us up in Utrecht. His grandpa decorates a real Christmas tree every year🎄 Our son meeting his great-grandpa for the first time.

Our son’s middle name was given to him by his Indonesian grandfather, who we love. My son is also smiling a lot meeting his great-grandpa ☺︎ My husband’s grandparents live in Friesland, the Netherlands. Literally translated ”Real Fries Sugar Bread”. It’s a large amount of sugar and cinnamon bread.

Dokkum is a small town with a population of about 12,830 people. My parents and grandparents lived in a big cities in Japan, so this is “Inaka” for me. Friesland, which is different from Amsterdam, retains much of the atmosphere of the old Netherlands.

Most of the buildings in this small town were built over 400 years ago, so it is important to keep exteriors intact. Olibollen is only sold during the year-end and New Year holidays. It’s Dutch fried donut literally translated as “oil ball”. It looks similar to sata-andagi (Okinawan donut) but has a softer texture.

Add lots of powdered sugar to the bag👍 Before going home, we need to get bread at the bakery. This is Kerststol, a Dutch stollen. Ontbijtkoek is a cinnamon bun similar to Castella. Oranjekoek is a famous cake from Friesland. I let 2 months old baby holding a bottle. stuck in his gums. LOL

Let’s preparing dinner. Tonight, we’re going to have his grandfather’s Indonesian recipe, mackerel in the oven. Onions seasoned with ketchup (an Indonesian seasoning) are placed on top of the mackerel and baked in the oven. It’s so simple, but it’s super delicious. It’s an all-purpose seasoning ever!

In the Netherland, supermarkets are closed on Christmas from the 24th to the 26th, so I buy a lot. I do his hair every morning. He’s in a good mood having his dad and great-grandpa playing with him. Kibbeling is a famous Dutch fried cod. Great-grandfather playing with his great-grandson.

On this day, we went to visit my husband’s grandmother who lives in a nursing home in the next town♪ His grandmother was a midwife. She was looking forward to meeting her great-grandson. Some said Dutch Kroket is an origin of Japanese croquettes.

I love taking a walk with the dog. Since the arrival of a new family idol (our baby boy), he doesn’t get a lot of attention from us but of course we still love you❤️ I keep forgetting to buy things. It’s so nice there’s a small supermarket that’s open on the 24th.

In northern Netherlands. Super windy today. This is a meat bun (Bapao) that I must eat when I come to the Netherlands because I can’t find it in Germany. We came to see his great-grandmother again. We are walking around with our mini Santa and he became popular among the elderly🎅

My mother-in-law forgot to add the essential ingredient, tempeh. lol Her delisious vegan recipe is a Christmas staple. I enjoy eating Oranjekoek in the middle of the night when the family is asleep. Eating breakfast with the whole family on the 25th is one of our family’s Christmas rituals.

In the Netherlands, people start eating stollen from the morning of the 25th. The Netherlands is famous for its Dutch Weather, which has a rapidly changing climate. We came for a walk after breakfast before the weather changes. This is a dessert that his aunt makes every Christmas.

Tutti Frutti is made by his aunt who inherited her grandmother’s recipe. In the Netherlands, people celebrate Christmas on the 25th and 26th of December. The wind is really strong today …

My husband’s famouse Nasi Goreng, which we always eat when we get together as a family, was our dinner on the second day of Christmas. Tonight we’re going out to the city at night. It’s just a small walk. My bad habit is peeking into someone’s house while walking through the dutch window. hahaha

The tall Christmas tree in the middle of town is decorated with wishes and memories of loved ones who have passed away. The first Christmas holiday with a Dutch family and our 2 month old son🎄 It went by so quickly, but it was the most memorable Christmas❤️
