This is the first time after COVID that we are visiting Japan. And our first time coming to Hokkaido. This is one of the morning markets you can get fresh, raw seafood served to you at Otaru. Although I had a hard time deciding what to get. Too many choices to choose from!

We went to the shopping street of Otaru, with the sound of the wind chimes tickling our ears. Up in one of the stores, is a home goods store specialising in chopsticks and chopsticks rests. They were so fun to look at, with their eye-catching patterns.

Could not resist and got a pair. Guess which I bought? Otaru is home to one of Japan’s major music box industries. This is one of the place to see a range of different modern and historical pieces.

Enjoyed a breezy walk down this canal in the evening, but I heard the night scene here looks stunning. 63 gas lamps will be lit along this canal, lighting up the cobblestone path. We missed it this time round. Next time, perhaps!

I wonder how they are able to not sneak in a few biscuits while working. I know I can’t. Never a holiday without a visit to one of the city’s art museum or park. Mostly families with their kids here to take in the summer heat and greeneries.

Chanced upon this place while we were looking for a place for lunch. I’m surprised how much we enjoyed the curry rice here despite the heatwave. Service and food was impeccable. I’m definitely coming back. This normal apartment building is filled with more than 10 shops. Each housed in individual apartments.

There are cafes, bakeries, jewellery and even a vinyl store housed here. Feels like uncovering multiple treasure troves as you go. Caught the lavender season here at Hokkaido. The smell was so calming.

  1. Thank you for watching!

This trip to Hokkaido in the midst of summer showed a different side of the city usually known for its winter season.

Seeing how lush and green the city was changed our perspective of what it should be and what it is like in a different season. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

Where were you headed in the summer? Where are you heading to next?
