Since ancient times, the vast forest called Tadasunomori has been the object of worship for the people of Kyoto, and Shimogamo Shrine was built as a shrine to protect the forest.
The “Tadasunomori Forest,” which has the same vegetation as the primeval forests of the 3rd century B.C., is not only a valuable urban forest and a national historic site, but also a forest of culture that is registered as a UNESCO “World Cultural Heritage” because it contains many historical buildings, including two national treasures, 53 important cultural properties, and 30 important shrine buildings.
