Koyasan: A Spiritual Retreat Amidst Sacred Temples and Forests

<Overview and Highlights>
Mount Koya (Koyasan) in Wakayama Prefecture is one of the most important sacred sites of Japanese Buddhism. Home to the head temple of the Shingon sect, Kongobu-ji, along with numerous other temples and sub-temples, its serene atmosphere provides a deeply calming experience for visitors. Particularly, the Okunoin Cemetery is a mystical place symbolizing Koyasan, with thousands of stone stupas lining the pilgrimage path. Staying in a temple lodging (shukubo) at Koyasan offers a unique opportunity to deeply experience Japanese Buddhist culture, including tasting shojin-ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine) and participating in morning prayers. Additionally, visitors can purchase local specialties like Koyasan’s tofu and traditional handicrafts.
