It is a pedestrian tunnel under the sea! It’s interesting that it connects Japan’s two main islands and prefectures. After going underground by elevator, we can cross the strait on foot!

The Kanmon Undersea Tunnel is located in Japan’s Kanmon Strait. It consists of two levels, a 3,461-meter road for vehicles and a 780-meter section for pedestrians. The pedestrian path is 4m wide and is situated 58m below sea level. The tunnel connects Yamaguchi Prefecture on Honshu Island and Fukuoka Prefecture on Kyushu Island. In the tunnel you can meet locals, tourists and runners. The prefectural border in the middle of the path is a very popular photo spot. The vicinity of the entrances on both sides of the tunnel is very attractive for tourists. On the side of the island of Honshu there is a place commemorating the famous battle of the 12th century. On the side of the island of Kyushu there is a picturesque coastal shrine and a seaside promenade. This makes the tunnel a great sightseeing spot for tourists who visit both cities.
