Japan’s must-visit hot spring destination: GUNMA (Ep 1)

Gunma is famous in Japan for the hot springs and the natural beauty. It’s a place to escape the 9 to 5 and the chaos of the big cities, and enjoy scenic views and relaxing onsens. All that while discovering the true Japanese culture.

Gunma is located just about one hour by train from Tokyo via the Joetsu Shinkansen. We started the trip in Minakami, where we practiced a sport unknown to us until now: canyoning. We then relaxed at a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) called Takaragawa Onsen Osenkaku, renowned for its outdoor hot spring baths. We didn’t expect that dinner and breakfast would be equally fantastic experiences. The following day, we drove to the town of Katashina for a 5-hour hike at the Oze National Park, where we saw some of the most beautiful scenery on the trip.

This video not only showcases the natural beauty of Gunma but also provides a firsthand look at Japanese customs and traditions, making it a must-watch if you’re interested in off-the-beaten-path travel experiences in Japan. This is a three-part series covering five different areas in Gunma.
Join us to discover that Japan offers way more than just highrises and tech.

Thanks to Visit Gunma for sponsoring this series.

► WHO AM I?

I am a Brazilian-American journalist living in Florida. After traveling the world working with sports, news, and events for over 15 years, I realized that what I really love is the travel part of it all. So I exchanged life in the newsrooms and stadiums for the daily challenge of being an independent content producer. I created this channel to share the beauties of the world… stuff that, for so long, I only kept to myself. Also to help people planning similar trips and to inspire more people to venture out and enjoy life!

P.S.: The funny guy who appears in the vlogs is my husband, Gordon. He is Canadian-American, and he’s actually camera-shy. That’s why he’s behind the camera most of the time 😉

  1. Hellooooo! Sorry we went missing for a while. We had this amazing opportunity to travel to Gunma, Japan and we shot well over 10 hours of content. So it took some time to edit. But now we’re ready to start sharing this great adventure 😁. We’ll have a quick pause in the Australia videos (I guess you probably also want to see a different country by now 😂), and right after this 3-video series we get back to Australia. Thank you so much for your support 🙏, and hope you enjoy! 😊❤️🙌

  2. Hi Renata san I’m Japanese from Osaka. I was very impressed this video and glad you both enjoyed Gunma 🙂
I felt that I wanted to go to Gunma too!

  3. This is my favorite of your excellent travelogues. I so appreciate the Japanese aesthetic. And how splendid that you visited in the fall. Sigh.

  4. Япония красивая страна с очень интересной культурой.Страна хоть и не сильно больная но природа там безумно прекрасна
    Отличное видео, спасибо большое 🔥👍

  5. 🇯🇵Thank you for uploading the Japanese video. Gunma Prefecture's wonderful nature and fun nature river rafting was very interesting. It was interesting because it was a sport that even Japanese people didn't know about. The food scene at the hot spring inn and the relaxing hot springs were very interesting. I would like to go there at least once. Also, she looks very cute in a yukata. I'm looking forward to the next video from another location.

  6. The Yamagata Shinkansen 🚄 will be updated next year, so we recommend you to go to the hot springs ♨️ in Yamagata Prefecture as well. There are famous hot springs such as Zao Onsen ♨️, and Yamagata City and other areas have Yamagata & Yonezawa beef, Sangenton pork and Genghis Khan, ramen, imoni soup, rice, edamame, fruit, ball konjac, sake, wine, pickles, etc. And they are very delicious!! It is a very beautiful area blessed with magnificent natural beauty.

  7. Wow, the most risk taking activity I’ve seen you take since Mall of America ( and that was a controlled environment).. well done ( love the hoots from Gordon). Now I MUST go, maybe in 25. My trips for 24 are booked. St Matin, Ireland, and Hotel Excartet. Bill
