Fantastic advice, thanks Mark and Megan! One thing I will add is that 3rd party websites are not comprehensive directories. The best of the best are often not on there because they don't need to be!
Oh, I literally am booking my tours for Portugal right now. Got a couple through GetYourGuide and now I’m going to go back and look to see who the company is running the tour and book through them. Thanks for your recommendation. And if you know any guides in Porto or Lisbon, please pass them along… Thanks again.
Great tips! We just had a tour with Viator, saw them on Tripadvisor. What made us book with them was that we can see other travellers' experience with them on Tripadvisor. And when we cancelled one of the tours that we booked, Viator refunded our money back almost instantly. Note; not trying to endorse Tripadvisor here, as through the years (and different countries we've travelled) we have had mixed experience with the agencies listed on Tripadvisor, some excellent, some bad, even scammed us.
Another great video ! I always tell people to book direct . I saw a video for a tour I was interested in the link took me to Viator , looked for the name and contacted them direct . They’ll make more $ without giving a % to Viator and I’m saving approximately $50 booking direct . Win/win ❤
Never take Guide I choose my list to things visit before I travel with lonely planet book and then I use my Google maps and using public transport just like local
I am planning a trip to Athens and want to get a guide to poseidon site so now I know more about how to get a guide! Thank you for these amazing tips.
Thanks for the tip!
what would happens if someone gets raped by a local guide!
Great advertisement for all of us. As one of the professional NYC Licensed Guides I appreciate this video. Thank you Megan and Wolter!
So if you book directly with the guide vs the search engine, will the guide give you part of the 30% that they save?
MARK!!!!! Hey there…Just sending some Thank You! You Hosts so well! Great seeing you and your wife talkin about Visiting here and there! Please be well…Are you from The Midwest? Just watching a Wolters' brings me some comfort!
I didn't even know that licensing for guides was a thing!
I wonder if local universities have any resources. Like, maybe the Music Dept. At University of Vienna can steer you to great composer tours that cater to music and history nerds and have knowledgeable guides who won't just repeat the common myths.
I always worry that the guide is going to tell me nonsense. How can I be sure that I'm not getting a whitewashed history lesson or that their stories aren't urban legends?
I've taken Viatour (Rome to Pompeii) and Free Tours by Foot (London free walking tour), and both have been excellent. For solo female travelers, be wary of booking with a guide … just general security advice. Also, be sure that a local guide is "certified." In my local city, for example, there are multiple local guides who are long on promises and short on actual knowledge … generally, they rip off their clients.
Another place to look for guides and tours are guide books. The Lonely Planet guide books are very good places to find this kind of information
Thanks, booked a tour yesterday, for when I'm in Rome, via Viator…checked the tour operator that they book for, googled them, and found out it was $10 cheaper to book the excursion directly via the company, cancelled the original booking and rebooked with the tour company directly, assuming Viator takes 30% of booking price it's win/win for company and customer…very useful indeed!
Omg I know Megan. She is great!
I love using guides. In some cities, I have gotten tours through Viator or the like and if I liked the guide, I would ask them if they would be interested in providing a private tour. They always say yes and I find that these are the best tours. In NYC recently, I had the sublime pleasure of taking a tour with Megan, which is the first time I have booked a private tour directly. She did a great job and provided a really interesting tour. She has a vast knowledge about NYC and is able, on the spot, to personalize the tour to cater to your interests. It was a wonderful, free-flowing conversation that was a very enjoyable experience. I highly recommend her services.
She also offers discounts if you have a corgi and you bring it along or if you share pictures of it (just kidding).
I have a question. Would taking 10% from a tour guide and helping others find such great guides like Megan be acceptable? My platform is not ready but will be in a 2 weeks.I want people to get real experiences and authentic connections but at same time, I have a platform that is really about great guides which will involve inbuilt social media making the most than me who is an intermediary . If you are a tour guide please help me out as I want to help others find you but it costs money to launch and advertise and I want what’s fair. You get 90% of the money and what I get goes to advertising with maybe 5 % to me and what I want is network effect. I will not disrespect Tour guides and make an app that states GetYourGuide. Any comments will be appreciated
Do you know a guide in rome? I'll like to see as must a possibel of Julius caesar
