What is Yosakoi?
In 1953, during the post-war recession, the Kochi Chamber of Commerce and Industry took the lead in creating the Yosakoi Festival with the aim of economic recovery and regional revitalization.
In 1992, Hokkaido students who were fascinated by Kochi’s Yosakoi Festival held the “YOSAKOI Soran Festival.” Taking this opportunity, Sakoi spread throughout the country. Konochiba YOSAKOI was first held in 2004. The only rule is to hold Naruko in your hand!
The music, choreography, and costumes are of course free, and are original to each team. Dances that are created with free ideas are highly performative, which is what makes Yosakoi so appealing.
Chiba’s new culture is supported by fewer rules and more manners.
