Did you know you can visit ground zero of the world’s first nuclear explosion?
Today I visited the Trinity Site, the location where scientists from the Manhattan Project, led by Robert Oppenheimer, tested the first atomic bomb in 1945 in the desert of New Mexico.
Here’s three fascinating things I discovered at this place where the world was forever changed:
#3 Is it still radioactive? Yes, but not as bad as it was. Radiation is 10X higher than typical background radiation. A few visitors carried Geiger Counters to measure the radiation.
#2 The Trinity monument is a 12ft high lava rock obelisk built in 1965. It’s a popular spot for photos and I took a quick selfie before exploring the rest of ground zero.
And the #1 most fascinating thing at ground zero is Trinitite, the name given to the greenish glass formed where the heat of the bomb melted the desert sand. You can still find pieces of Trinitite at Ground Zero.

I want to add that I know this is a sensitive subject (politically, ethically, etc). This video isn’t about that. It’s simply an appreciation of an incredible work of physics (and other disciplines) as part of the Manhattan Project during WWII and a visit to a place that changed the world forever.

FYI – If you enjoyed this Short I also have a full length vid on my channel about my visit to the Trinity Site and Los Alamos. Thanks!
Clark, all I know is my tomatoes have never been bigger and my teeth have never been whiter.
imagine going to jail because you took a funny green rock
Hopefully the Oppenheimer movie will bring more attention to the area.
I did know
“I took a quick selfie before exploring the rest of ground zero.” 😂😂😂
Trinitite or vitrified sand is also found at Mt. Carmel in Israel…
I misread the title as Exploding nuclear ground zero, and got excited.
I still have a few pieces of trinitite from my visit. I would love a few large pieces like the ones in the box ❤
thats just marketing for the movie
I aint never going there. I like my red bloood count and healty cells.
Is this seth rogen speaking?
He was a hero .
The real nuke town
1. Go to ground zero
2. Sneak out some green rocks
3. Make a thing that goes boom
4. Watch
Cant believe they actually made this after cillian Murphy did a photo shoot here
why the trinitite have green colored??
That makes the obelisk a “Kodak Picturesque Spot” for those of you who have traveled the highways of the USA.
You deserve more subscribers
Amazing!
Is nobody thinking it is nuts to use atomic( energy) for making boms to destroy te earth and humanity?? Why not use it for good..
Insane that it’s still 10 times more radioactive then normal 78 years later.
“Theft of the US government” like they haven’t stole before if it’s that precious they should pick it all up
"Number 1, is it still radioactive? Yes!"
Flatlines
BUT WHY GO THERE?
10x radioactive than background radioactivity.
Great idea, let's go hangout there all day!
