In this Indonesia Travel Vlog, we finally make it to the island of SULAWESI (Celebes)!!! Since we arrived in Indonesia, we were so excited to visit this island that is less touristy than the other places we went to! We had a late flight from Bali into Makassar, so we stayed in a cheap hotel and spent the whole day exploring all of Makassar before taking an overnight bus to Toraja! We started the day at the Laku Patisserie – a really cute coffee shop in the center of Makassar! They had amazing coffee, amazing avocado toast, and there was a picture of the Sagrada Familia from Barcelona (where Carles is from)! The cafe was in the best location right across the street from Fort Rotterdam Makassar! The fort is one of the most popular places to visit in Makassar! It’s a 17th century Dutch fort that was in use until the 1930’s. It’s also the most well preserved Dutch building in all of Indonesia! It’s free to enter and walk around the grounds, however there is also a museum part you can enter for a small fee. It was really neat to walk around the Dutch era complex in the middle of an island in Indonesia! When we left the fort, we walked past a giant gong to get to the famous Somba Opu Shopping Street. We were expecting more of a market type shopping street, but it was actually full of gold/silver/jewelry stores! We were so surprised to see all these stores in the middle of the city. We got pretty hot walking so we decided to turn toward the beach. When we arrived at the water we were SHOCKED by the amazing view of The 99 Domes Mosque! We walked along the water past a few other cool statues until we arrived at Pantai Losari (Losari Beach). At the bottom of Losari Beach we came to the Floating Mosque aka Masjid Amirul Mukminin. We thought we wouldn’t be allowed in as we weren’t dressed properly, but the guy working outside spoke English very well and said just take off our shoes and we could go in! We walked up the stairs to see, but didn’t enter as we weren’t dressed properly.. It was still so cool to see the blue floating mosque in person! When we left the mosque, we continued walking toward the 99 Domes Mosque. We went by many different statues of famous people from Makassar until we reached the Center Point of Indonesia! There’s a cool globe that says it’s the center and we think it might actually be the CENTER of Indonesia if you look at a map (just another reminder that Indonesia is HUGE)! We continued to walk over the bridge to our final destination – the 99 Domes Mosque!!! It is probably the coolest mosque we’ve ever seen! The mosque was actually very busy when we arrived so we didn’t want to try to enter, however we were able to walk around the mosque and take pictures with so many people outside the mosque! From there we met up with a becak motor driver we had talked to earlier in the day. His motorbike actually had a Barcelona football seat so we had to take it back into the city to a gado gado restaurant we were recommended – Ratna Luwita. It was the best gado gado ever!! After we ate, we went back to our hotel to get ready for our overnight bus to Toraja!

  1. 15:50 That's my mother's car๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ it looks like she just got home from dance practice

Edit : The sea in Losari has turned brown because the land was reclaimed a long time ago, hopefully after the construction is complete the sea will return to blue

Edit 2: Indonesia's center point is not on a giant globe but in the middle of the land reclamation in front of the 99 dome mosque, you can see it from goggle earth. But this is not the exact point, The center point that is 100% accurate is in a remote village far from Makassar

  2. Kami warga indonesia pasti memperingati hari kemerdekaan dan saya harap kalian ikut berpartisipasi dalam hal tersebuy

  3. You look like good people, I hope one day you will also visit Kalimantan, the island of Borneo… there is a man from Canada who is walking around the island of Kalimantan. His channel is Kristian Hansen, a Canadian

  4. Natalie, the way you dressed in this video was how most Indonesian women dressed even to go to the mosque till the 1990s. But Indonesia has became much more conservative since then so now itโ€™s prudent to ask before going into one just in case you come across people who are more opinionated about how a woman should dress.

Iโ€™ve never liked taking the bus they have plying the route between Makassar and Rantepao, I wish there was a better way to go to Tana Toraja other than taking the bus or the plane (which is just too expensive for me).

BTW that gado-gado looks good but itโ€™s not a dish typical to South Sulawesi. Hope you managed to try authentic Torajan/Bugis/Makassarese dishes while youโ€™re in the province.

  5. Somba Opu memang terkenal dengan jajaran toko emas nya… Suami dulu membeli emas di situ waktu mau menikahi saya… โ˜บ
Selain itu banyak toko souvenir khas Sulawesi Selatan dan juga menjual aneka makanan termasuk kopi Toraja

  6. welcome to the new dimension..
stil in Indonesia but you will experience many different things

  7. wahh senang sekali melihat ekspresi kalian menjelajahi sedikit kota Makassar๐Ÿ˜Šselamat bersenang senang di Sulawesi Selatanโค

  8. When you come to Losari beach at that time, you saw lots of police and many sarnafil tents being dismantled. That's because a few days earlier a joint non-war exercise was held, namely the Komodo Multilateral Naval Exercise 2023. Navies from 36 countries took part in this exercise which was centered in the Makassar Strait. This activity is focused on regional maritime cooperation, disaster management, and humanitarian operations. I was able to see the combined practice, because I came to Makassar before the event was held. At that time, I saw that there was a parachuting attraction, a fighter plane air show, and many warships anchored around Losari beach from 36 countries.

  9. wow, adventure in Sulawesi, well I hope you can visit Tana Toraja too, I want to go there but not possible at the moment……
great video Nat & Carles… please enjoy your stay ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. Kota yang keren, tp sangat disayangkan orang meninggalkan gelas kertas minum di atas benteng, sungguh tidak bertanggung jawab. Padahal masuk gratis.

  11. Those statues you met on Losari beach are national freedom fighter heroesโ€ฆand so are most of the human statues throughout Indonesia most often are the national heroes of freedom fighters before Indonesiaโ€™s independence who come from that area

  12. Yeay , my hometown . Well is not my hometown actually, because i was born and raise in West Papua Raja Ampat , but Makassar are where my parents come from and i went to collage there . Back in 2010 . So yeah . And im never go to the Rotterdam Fort , well just out side because at theres so many cafe there . Lucky you guys last im visit makassar the Mosque is still under construction. But i bet you guys will love Toraja. Ive been there 3 times already to catching sunrise, and you guys will love the Cave , and the cliffs where they put those who pass away

  13. Ahhh im a fans you guys . Are u still in Indonesia? Because i know the video you upload is very late than actual travel. Let me know in this comment if you guys in jakarta .

  14. Mix gado-gado with rice is absolutely allow Carles, because in some place that sell Gado-Gado you can also order Gado-Gado with rice,, I often order gado-gado with rice when I was lived in Depok (Near Jakarta area) ๐Ÿ˜‚ @NatalieandCarles

  15. Before you heading to Toraja you can visit : Bantimurung Waterfall and Rammang Rammang Village in Maros. For culinary : Konro Bakar ( grilled ribs) and Coto Makassar. Makassar is famous for its fresh seafood and there are many kind of fish. Near Losari Beach (behind the hospital) you can find many seafood restaurant such as New Dinar Restaurant etc. If you missed Pizza there is small authentic Italian Restaurant (the owner is Italian) called La Piccola Italy on those street ( Lamadukeleng Street). Enjoy your trip in Sulawesi.

    * Expand your Bahasa vocabulary, just standard sentence. Although it seems wrong, ppl here will feel it fun when foreigners are just learning their language
    * Do more clips when you're asking for help or asking something.
Because social culture here prefers things related to interaction.
