Visiting Venice is an exhilarating and romantic experience for any traveller. Situated on the coast of northeastern Italy, the city of Venice has remained largely unchanged since it was founded in the 600s, offering visitors a glimpse into the past with its narrow cobblestone alleys, iconic canals, and gondolas. Whether it’s your first time exploring the city or it’s a return trip full of nostalgia, Venice will leave you with indelible impressions and magical memories.
One of the most remarkable features of Venice is its abundance of historical bridges. The most notable of these is the Rialto Bridge, which crosses the Grand Canal near St. Mark’s Square. Other popular bridges include the Scalzi Bridge, the Accademia Bridge, and the Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs). All of these bridges span Venice’s 170 canals, providing visitors with stunning views of the city.
One of the best ways to explore Venice is by taking a gondola ride. Gliding down the canals past enchanting palazzos and churches transports you to another world, while listening to the gondolier’s singing about the city’s past. Alternatively, there are numerous vaporetti (water buses) that crisscross the city, making it easy to get to your destination quickly and conveniently.
No trip to Venice is complete without experiencing the city’s famed Cuisine. There is no shortage of delicious restaurants, from the traditional family-run bacari offering traditional specialities like Cicchetti, to trendy establishments that meld modern and regional ingredients. Some of the best restaurants include Osteria al Garanghelo, Barbablu and Da Fiore.
The main attractions of Venice are most concentrated around St. Mark’s Square, such as the iconic St. Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, and the Campanile bell-tower, all of which have fascinating histories. The nearby Galleria dell’Accademia houses works by the likes of Bellini, Titian, and Veronese. The Rialto Bridge is the perfect place to soak up Venice’s skyline, while the Grand Canal provides stunning views of the city.
Every corner of Venice contains its own unique magic, as the entire city is a living breathing museum. Whether it’s taking in impromptu concerts in hidden courtyards, strolling past the waning facades of past grandeur, or losing yourself in the vibrant tapestry of the colourful street Murano – the romantic atmosphere and sense of wonder never cease.
When looking for lodging, visitors can find a range of luxury hotels, boutique guesthouses, and Airbnb options, depending on their budget and preferences. There are also plenty of affordable dining options, such as the wonderful trattorias sprinkled throughout the city.
Regardless of how you spend your time in Venice, the romantic atmosphere of this unique city will leave you enchanted. From winding canals and Renaissance masterpieces, to savory food and gondola rides, there is no doubt that your visit will be an unforgettable one. So why not take the plunge and experience the magic for yourself?
Venice, the historic city of canals and floating architecture, has faced perennial threats from floods. The city has a long history with flooding, called Acqua Alta, which has been documented since Roman times.
In recent years, extreme flooding in Venice has become more frequent due to climate change. The rising sea levels and increasingly intense storms are making the city prone to significant flooding events. The city has become a hotspot for climate-related events, with flooding and tidal surges becoming more frequent in recent years.
Over the last decade, flooding events of varying intensities have been experienced in the city. In November 2019, the greatest flooding in more than 50 years occurred, with the acqua alta reaching 1.87 meters. The highest point in Venice is just 1.1 meters, meaning that this flooding event caused nearly the entire city to be underwater in some degree.
Flooding events like these expose Venice to significant risks, and strain the municipal budget as the city is forced to use vast amounts of resources for flood defense. This is further compounded by the fact that Venice is built on a delicate, sensitive environment, meaning that any negative impacts of the flooding can have long-term consequences.
In response to flooding, the Italian government has implemented a range of measures including the construction of a mobile flood defense system. The MOSE project, set to be completed by 2021, is designed to protect the city from flooding events by constructing a series of gates that can be activated when high tides are expected.
Even with this project, the long-term outlook for Venice is somewhat uncertain. The city is particularly vulnerable to storms and sea-level rise due to its position at the lagoon. This means that the frequent flooding events which have become a part of life in Venice are likely to continue in the future.
