Sutton Courtenay is a picturesque village in Oxfordshire (formerly in Berkshire) with a long and varied history.

Sutton means ‘South Town (ie. Farm)’: south of Abingdon that is. The original Saxon village of sunken-floor ‘grub-huts’ and post built houses was excavated in the 1920s. It was the first Anglo-Saxon village discovered by Archaeologists and dates from the 5th and 6th centuries.

The Domesday Book of 1086 records that King William I (the Conqueror) held the Manor of Sudtone and that it contained three mills, 300 acres of river meadows and extensive woodlands.

All Saints church has notable people buried in the churchyard include UK Prime Minister H. H. Asquith and his second wife Margot Asquith, newspaper owner David Astor and novelist George Orwell (under his real name of Eric Arthur Blair)

  1. I love watching these on Sunday mornings. I was thinking some nice soft music for a background would be great but then I wouldn’t be able to hear nature’s music…all the birds singing/chirping away! Beautiful…just beautiful and peaceful! Thank you…you do have a lovely country!!

  2. Even with all the visible modern conveniences, you can definitely feel the history here. A most enjoyable walk. Thank you.

  3. Those chirping birds are all the music we need. Hundreds years of history, just like in my country. Thanks again😊🇨🇦🇬🇧🇵🇱

  4. So much charm in one walk – the yellow roses, the French blue doors, the wisteria, the flowering shrubs and trees, the dancing hares on a thatched roof! Just love it. Thank you!

  5. What a beautiful place. A lovely gentle walk. Thanks so much for giving us these films. Wonderful to see the wisteria coming out. My own wisteria is somewhat lacklustre so far this year… But less of that. Thanks…

  6. Thank you for sharing this captivating glimpse into the idyllic village of Sutton Courtenay! The rich history and charming features of this Oxfordshire gem are truly fascinating. It's incredible to learn about the ancient Saxon village, the Domesday Book's recording of King William I's holdings, and the notable figures laid to rest in All Saints churchyard. Your video beautifully showcases the English countryside and its serene beauty. It's a delight to explore lesser-known places like Sutton Courtenay through your lens. Thank you for taking us on this virtual walk and immersing us in the village's history and natural splendor!

  7. Kevin, I love that bright blue door in the brick wall. Thanks for taking a close up of it. I may try a painting of it.
