This park is one of the most beautiful water parks in Japan and loved by local people as a relaxation spot. Construction of the Japanese strolling garden in Ohori Park began in 1979 to mark the park’s 50th anniversary. The garden, comprised of small hills, groves of trees, and ponds, opened to the public in 1984. It was constructed with its basic concept being to express classical Japanese beauty through traditional garden-making techniques. The area includes walking paths and children’s playgrounds. This park is beloved as a place to walk, run, or just relax.
Ohori Park is a 3 acre garden featuring a Japanese water garden, Zen garden and a tea house. Here you also find a Karesansui. Karesansui is one of the typical categories of Japanese gardens; this refers to a dry landscape garden where sand and rocks are shaped to represent water.
Garden design is an important Japanese art form that has been refined for more than 1000 years. Gardens have evolved into a variety of styles with different purposes. The present park was reconstructed by Fukuoka City, modeled on the West Lake of China, and opened in 1929. There are three islands in the middle of the pond that are connected to the mainland and each other by elegant stone bridges.
Hundreds of winter birds travel from distant Siberia to the pond at Ohori Park from November to March of each year. Ohori Park is home to pine trees at Nakanoshima; willow trees near the pond; and oak, camphor, gingko, holly, magnolia, fig, and other types of plants in the green belt.
