和歌山城は和歌山市の中心部に位置する標高48.9mの虎伏山（とらふすやま）に建造され、北部を流れる紀の川を天然の堀とする。本丸の北側に二の丸が配され、その外に大きく三の丸が配された、梯郭式平山城である。
徳川頼宣は1621年（元和7年）より城の大改修と城下町の拡張を始め、計画では完成時より更に大規模な城構えになる予定であったが、大規模な改修であったため幕府より謀反の嫌疑をかけられるほどであった。しかし、附家老安藤直次の弁明で事なきを得た。また、外堀も拡張して総構えにしようとしたが、幕府より嫌疑をかけられ中止させられてしまったため、堀止の地名が残っている。後、数度の火災に遭ったが、その度に再建された。現在、城跡として現存しているのは最盛期の4分の1ほどの面積である（城の北側から見た図）。
その他、特徴としては時代によって異なる石垣の積み方などがある。それに、豊臣・浅野時代の石垣には刻印された石垣石がある。模様は約170種類、2,100個以上の石に確認されているが、その大半が和泉砂石である。
現在は、本丸と二の丸が和歌山城公園となっており、本丸南西部には和歌山縣護国神社があり、南の丸には和歌山公園動物園がある。主に三の丸跡等には県庁、和歌山市役所や和歌山市消防局、和歌山地方裁判所・和歌山家庭裁判所・和歌山地方検察庁をはじめ公的機関や学校、商業施設、オフィス街、和歌山中央郵便局、県立近代美術館・県立博物館などがある。
遺構として石垣、堀をはじめ、公園内には岡口門と土塀、追廻門が現存し、岡口門と土塀は国の重要文化財に指定され、二の丸にある大楠は県指定特別天然記念物に指定されている。また、大小天守群とそれに続く櫓・門、大手門・一之橋が復元されている。
