On an interrail trip around Europe in the summer we went to some major cities such as Brussels, Berlin and Copenhagen. We also went to Wuppertal, not a city most people will have even heard of. There’s not a lot there, to be fair, although it is a nice enough city. But there is one thing that it has – the Wuppertal suspension railway, or the Schwebebahn as it is known in Germany.
Schwebebahn translates as suspension railway and that is exactly that this is – a monorail train that runs down the heart of Wuppertal, from east to west. Mostly over the Wupper river but also down some little side streets where you get to race the cars right below you.
It is one of the most amazing public transport systems, maybe even the best, and well worth us making it one of our destinations out of all the cities in Europe we could have gone to.
