We discovered the hidden gems inside of Puerto Viejo on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. The vibe was unbelievable, the people were friendly and engaging and that Caribe Culture of The Old Harbor was on full display. We hope you enjoy this intimate cultural deep dive.

  1. I LOVE your perspective on different locales. This video is amazing bringing the local view!! I’m currently researching my retirement spot. You made this one high on the list.

  2. Great video! I can’t wait to go to PV. Love the rustic-ness, the culture, the relaxed vibe and the beauty ✨

  3. I found you guys and I just absolutely love your videos. This video is awesome though. I keep rewinding it and rewatching it. Please make some more about this beautiful place. My first husband was Jamaican and I love Caribbean food. I want to travel to Costa Rica and the videos make me want to come very soon. Thanks for all the content. I be watching all of your videos. I'm from Florida as well.

  4. Why make videos highlighting black pride if it not to address how the people deal with oppression…that’s the beauty of the spirit of black people?

  5. Ok. Last comment. After living there for two years, I miss my home away from home. Getting to see all my framily and friends, the air and everything. I'm gonna cry! 😍

  6. Hey! I have a quick question, F(25) solo traveling for the first time to Puerto Viejo for a month while working remote. I'd like to meet people and make friends. Selina is a bit more expensive than an airbnb. The ABNB I want to stay at is 5 mins from town vs Selina 15mins (walking). I want to do Selina so that I could also potentially have people to walk to and from town with and just have more of a community vibe. I tend to become introverted. Don't know if it justifies paying premium for though. Based on your experience do you think I would get more out of being close to town or at Selina?

  7. When I was in San Jose and asked about Puerto Viejo, the local people did not have a favourable opinion of the place. We went anyway by bus from San Jose. The ticket guy at the bus depot, once he realised our Spanish was not very good sold us 2 "standing only" seats and the people behind us (locals who spoke perfect Spanish) in the bus line were sold proper seats for the 4 hour school bus ride to PV. When I got off the bus 2 or 3 guys came up to me trying to sell me drugs. We went to a cheap hotel that consisted of a pipe in the wall for a shower and a toilet that didn't flush, barely a mattress and lizards scuttling around in the walls all night. Breakfast was at this place outside that had alot of flies competing for our food with us. The beach was full of stones, and we rented 2 bikes that broke down on us at the furthest point from the rental place forcing us to walk back. Every time I bought something with cash the locals always short changed me and then pretended to not know what I was talking about when I called them out on it.The guy selling us the return tickets to San Jose, once again when he saw that our Spanish was not very good, tried the "standing room" trick but we caught it and made him sell us numbered seats. When we got on the bus we saw others (foreigners) who were angry that they were sold standing room tickets. 2 girls from France and a couple from Germany had to stand for 4 hours like we did. This was my honest experience in beautiful Puerto Viejo.

  8. My mom's side is from Costa Rica. My great grandmother lives out there still. I'm half Costa Rican and half white. And I've still never been there yet. It's cool how you to speak and understand Spanish naturally at that like I did.

  9. Thank you so much for this video!! I’m going to Puerto Viejo in August and I actually booked the same Airbnb! I’m trynna get all the connects to our people over there!! This was very helpful, thank you!! I would also love to know if you ni of any updates with the hotel our brotha is building…

  10. I’m so happy, I came across your video. I am traveling to Costa Rica in the next few months and was discouraged from heading to Limón as it was “dangerous”. Being an Afro-Honduran myself, something felt off about that sentiment, as I knew that Limon was the Afro Caribbean side of Costa Rica. Thank you so much for this video, I am now looking to alter my trip to make it to this side.

  11. I just returned from a week there! I chose it because it was a little more affordable than the Pacific side but I feel like I discovered the best kept secret of Costa Rica. I loved everything about the place: The vibe, the beaches, the jungle, the people, the animals. It was a graduation trip for my 18 year old daughter and she loved it as much as I did. Either we're really good at choosing restaurants or you just can't find bad food there.
    Excellent video!

  12. What's the name if the AIRBB PLEASE? LAST ONE I STAYED BY WAS AROUND THE CORNER FROM MY GRANDMOTHERS HOUSE IN LIMON MARTHA'S PLACE. HOWEVER, I REALLY WANT TO STAY IN Puerto Vijeo, Limon

  13. Wow that was a nice video. Should be heading to CR in October so will definitely visit Puerto Viejo. It looks comfortable and easy pace and the food looks delicious. You guys are beautiful and April I’m loving your hair , it’s gorgeous. Stay safe 🙏🏾

  14. This video made me teary-eyed. Black people are absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing your experience in PV; Jah bless.

  15. Lauren, here again…this whole you tube thing is new to me…how can I make a contribution to you journey….Loving the education…🥰

  16. Welp, I've just selected my next travel destination! As a Black woman from South Georgia (with Bajan roots), this place is exactly what I need! Thank you 🙂

  17. I would LOVE to volunteer at the Children's foundation whenever I move there!!!💜🙏🏾🙌🏾

  18. I am a man of color, and have lived 13 years in Guanacaste Costa Rica, on the Pacific side. Unfortunately, tourists of color seem to feel more comfortable on the more colorful Atlantic side, or San Jose. Frankly, being a rare person of color on the Pacific side, I have met and befriended several new friends who are millionaires and corporate owners. What can be greater than, enjoying beautiful Costa Rica, and having access to wealthy advice and partnerships! Also, no one within or outside of Costa Rica, speaks about all the negative issues of the Atlantic side! To Costa Ricans, the Atlantic side of Costa Rica is considered a stepchild, to be ignored and avoided.

  19. Thank you for sharing!! I’m going in February and after seeing this I have to extend my trip to enjoy this area !

  20. Still watching but loved that you featured Sadie! Everything that her company stands for is what I want to experience. Planning my trip right now as I watch the rest of your video. Thank you for highlighting this!

  21. I actually had a guy come at me with a machete about 13 years ago in a bar in Puerto Viejo, but I think it was mistaken identity, because he wasn't trying to rob me. he tried to slice me right away. I always heard great things about Viejo and actually visited before and didn't have a problem. Maybe one day I'll work up enough courage to go back, because I know those situations are rare. I just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

  22. Joe is d best. Him and his brother the best restaurant and polite respectfull.people. one of d few .. good ones .

  23. I'm looking to move to Costa Rica. Your videos give me a lot to think about. One thing I do find interesting is there are no marinas on the Carribean coast. I'm looking for a location for a new business. The east coast has me interested.
