The shrine is located on Mizushima, a tiny island off the coast of the Yatsushiro Sea in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. The name of the island “Water Island” is associated with a legend. While the emperor was having a meal on the island, he wanted to drink water, but he did not find it there. So he prayed to the gods for water, and a spring gushed out on the island.
Along with the local atmospheric and optical phenomenon known as Shiranui, Mizushima is a nationally recognized Place of Scenic Beauty.
