Japan Travel: Beauty and Art at the Hiroshi Senju Museum, Karuizawa, Nagano 53 Moopon
The Hiroshi Senju Museum is located in Naka-Karuizawa (中軽井沢), in Nagano Prefecture. The museum focuses on the works of renowned painter Senju Hiroshi. Creating “a museum of light” within the natural surroundings of Karuizawa, Senju Hiroshi hopes visitors to the museum will experience feelings of beauty, courage and the power of life. The artist is especially famous for his paintings of waterfalls.
The museum was designed by Nishizawa Ryue (who also created the Teshima Art Museum). The avant-garde design of museum is thought to combine Karuizawa’s nature with Senju’s art. The curves of the structures, allowing light to fall at certain locations, at certain angles, is said to evoke different visual experiences.
Visitors will find many interesting things to enjoy within the facility. The museum has a bakery with fresh bread prepared by Karuizawa’s leading bakery “Asanoya”. The museum shop has a variety of souvenirs as well books written by Hiroshi Senju. And outside the museum is the Color Leaf Garden. The pathways take visitors around the beautiful scenery containing 60,000 plants of 150 varieties.
