Ed, what do you do with your phone? Do you get a SIM card in Thailand? And does it also work in Cambodia? the last time I was in Thailand I didn´t change my SIM card and it cost me an absolute packet!

They make a profit everytime you give them US dollars. They are only giving you an exchange rate of 4000 per dollar when the actual rate is 4400 so your losing 10% when you give them US dollars. always pay in Kip!
