We travel to the Otaru Light Festival during a visit to Hokkaido, as a side quest of sorts to the Sapporro Snow Festival and blogged about it here: Although we do bypass Sapporro to begin with, only to stuff our bags into lockers at Sapporo Station. We then board another train to Otaru, for travel to the Otaru snow festival, which was an attraction in itself. If you manage to find a seat, or a window to watch from, then it should be on the right side of the train, as there really are fascinating views as the tracks hug the coastlines, and waves crash against the rocks and shores covered in snow. The snow is ridiculously thick in these parts of the world, to the point where I could no longer understand how people can actually survive in these conditions. I’d personally struggle to leave my house. So Otaru is a Port City, northwest of Sapporo, which hosts the “Otaru Snow Light Path Festival” which coincides with the Snow Festival in Sapporo. To reach it leave the station by the east exit, cross over the busy road directly in front of the station, and head east down Chuo Dori street until your reach the Otaru Canal.
