DAY 6 of 12 – Mount Aso was our destination for the sixth day of our epic 12-day road trip around the Japanese island of Kyushu. We drove from Kumamoto to the Aso-Kuju National Park. Our first stop was the lookout point at Daikanbo that gives amazing views of the valley and the mountains. We then traveled to Kusasenri in time for lunch.
We explored Kusasenri and the nearby Nakadake Crater on horseback, on foot and then from the air. The Nakadake Crater remains active and the best way to view it is from a helicopter. We flew right over the top of the volcano and could look inside the crater.
Watch this video to see what it’s like to fly over the top of an active volcano!
