Ginza is Japan’s iconic shopping district and has been visited by a surprisingly wealthy population since the early 1900s. As such, Ginza attracts tourists from all over Japan and Asia, and is now a major driver of Ginza’s continued success.

It may not look as busy as Shinjuku or Shibuya in the west, but when it comes to sales, Ginza is Tokyo’s commercial center, and the prices reflect that fact.

Ginza’s upscale stores are generally aimed at a more mature crowd. There are several high-end department stores, including the legendary Wako Department Store, and Mitsukoshi across the street.

Chuo-dori is closed to traffic on Sundays. Mikimoto, Louis Vuitton, Apple, Sony and many other major brands have megastores here, along with branches of international and Japanese banks and many luxury hotels.

History of Ginza
Ginza, meaning “where silver is minted,” is named after Tokugawa Ieyasu, who started minting silver coins in the early 17th century. Following the Meiji Restoration of 1868 and the increasing westernization of Japan, the area was developed as “Bricktown” by the British architect Thomas Waters in his 1872. The area quickly gained a reputation as the height of fashion—the height of Western fashion—and the place never looks back.
