Tomoe Gozen was a 12th Century Samurai Woman or Onna-musha. She served Minamoto no Yoshinaka in the Genpei War (1180-185) and took part in his campaign in driving his enemies out of Kyoto. Her presence at Kyoto’s Jidai Matsuri (Festival of Ages) is one of the highlights of the procession.
