Several years ago, Dr. Andy Kratter noticed loons from his Gainesville yard flying overhead in an east and northeast direction. This continued and continues each year from about mid-March until mid-April. Each subsequent spring, he devoted more time to loon watching, until last year when he transformed his hobby to a scientifically-designed research project. Dr. Andy Kratter has been Museum Operations Coordinator at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville for the past 26 years. There he does bird specimen preparation, manages the bird specimen collections and research permit applications. Andy’s wide experience before 1996 included field work in Peru, Trinidad, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Guyana, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Nepal, New Zealand, Italy, Australia, and most of the U.S., particularly Florida, California and Louisiana.

Orange Audubon Society was pleased to host Andy on February 24, 2022 to hear about this wonderful natural event.
Here’s an excellent Gainesville Sun article on it by Alachua Audubon Society president Debra Segal. https://www.gainesville.com/…/loons…/7044514002/
