People spend their hard-earned money and their precious vacation time in striking off dream destinations in their bucket list. But what if some destinations in that bucket list is not worth the pain?
These places or monuments or cities are simply not worth your hard-earned money and vacation time. I have personally visited each one of these over my life time and felt they are not worth having a dedicated trip to these locations.
1. Times Square, New York
There is nothing unique about Times Square. You see lots and lots of glaring lights in every building you see. Then there are stairs with different colour lights. That’s it. The area is so crowded all day long that it takes minutes to walk one block. If you like being pushed around and spending a lot of money on something you can buy anywhere else, then visit. Snap a few photos and never go there again. If you have to tick this place off your list, go at night for all the colourful lights.
2. Mannekan Piss, Brussels
If you have ever been to Brussels as a tourist, chances are that you went in search of Mannekan Piss as well. It’s a little boy. Peeing. That’s it. Of all the awesome things that Brussels has to offer, this is the least appealing that you would see. To make it worse, its not original anyway. It’s been stolen countless times.
3. Dancing House of Prague
The dancing house of Prague is an unconventional building which looks like dancing. The significance of this building is due to this location, not the building. When Americans bombed Prague in 1945, they dropped a bomb on this location. The building was demolished and rebuilt in 1996. That is all you need to know about Dancing House. If you visit this location, disappointment is guaranteed, as there is nothing special about this building today.
4. Vatican City
There’s plenty to see in the Vatican City, but frankly, it’s depressing to experience this much wealth in one place.
5. Burj Khalifa, Dubai
The tallest building in the world will get you more likes in Instagram and Facebook. But that’s about it. Visit by all means only if you absolutely must have a birds-eye view of Dubai or enjoy the idea of visiting an 148th floor. Not to mention the Himalayan cost to take that elevator, $100 a person. If you are in the city due to a 20-hour layover, then do a city seeing and may be click pictures in front of Burj Kalifa.
6. Whale Watching – Chicago
Unless you’re going at the peak season, you are going to be very disappointed. Even if you do visit during the peak season, you still have to stare into the ocean for quite long before seeing what looks like a small rock appear and disappear. And you paid $50 a person for that. Really?
7. Trevi Fountain, Rome
This fountain in Rome was completed in 1762 and has been revered for its beauty ever since. No doubt, it is beautiful. But add hundreds of people and long wait for hours to throw a coin in that fountain would bring you luck, it quickly becomes an awful idea to visit this place.
8. Gondola ride – Venice
Anyone who visits Venice would talk about a lot of awesome things, one of which is Gondola ride. This 40-minute ride could cost you anywhere between $100 – $200. It is not worth it as you need to wait for a very long time to get one and cost is totally unjustified. Take a normal boat ride instead; you will get a similar experience for much less.
10. The leaning tower of Pisa
One of the most unreal structures I ever visited is the leaning tower of Pisa. The tower looked like science fiction; even though it was smaller than what I am used to seeing in photos, it looked so much leaned that it shouldn’t exist. I had to wait on a 45-minute queue and then managed to get in the tower for $20. But inside it was nothing but stairs. What else could I expect from a bell tower. But the worst part it, after I am done taking my selfies, there is absolutely nothing that I could do in the town of Pisa.
15. MonoLisa
This is perhaps the most over-rated painting in the world. The fact that it has been lost and recovered made its worth increase manifold. You will be disappointed, the first time you visit it. When I visited, I was shocked to see a A4 size painting mobbed by hundreds of people. To protect the painting, officials have built a glass wall over it. So, due to the glare, even my photos with the painting were not that great. Even if you could put up with all this, the security guard wouldn’t let you get anywhere close to the painting. Instead of spending time on this, Louvre has many other majestic paintings; consider spending time with them. You won’t be disappointed.
Conclusion
These places are not necessarily bad places to visit. But if taking photos is forbidden in these places and if you are not allowed to tell anyone that you visited these places, then would you still consider going to these places? Think about it.
What other places did I miss? Let me know in the comments.
