🦊 What does the fox say? “Move over, Kyoto, you’ve got competition for the best shrine in Japan” probably..
⛩ If you Google “Japan”, you will be greeted with images of three major tourist sites: Mt Fuji, views of Mt Fuji from Yamanashi’s Chureito Pagoda, and the vermillion torii gates of Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Taisha. While many Japan tourists flood to see Kyoto’s famous fox shrine, there are two others that make up the “Big 3 Inari Shrines” that are far too frequently overlooked; Yutoku Inari in Saga Prefecture and Toyokawa Inari in Aichi Prefecture. Here’s why you’ll want to skip the crowds in Kyoto and why you need to visit Toyokawa Inari if you travel to Japan!
🦊 While Toyokawa Inari is not as colourful as its sister shrines, it is truly unique in that is it both a Shinto Shrine AND Buddhist Temple and it boasts a collection of thousands of fox statues! Reiko-Zuka, the Hill of Foxes, is filled with over 1000 stone fox statues with red bibs (“yodarekake”) that have been donated by worshippers whose wishes have been fulfilled. What makes this place even more cool is that no two of the fox statues look alike!
This site has been a power spot for success since the times of samurai warlords Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi and attracts several million domestic worshipers each year. There is plenty of famous Japanese foods to try just a short walk from the temple grounds for Japan street food fans, too!
Being a short stop from Nagoya and en route to popular destinations like Kyoto from Tokyo, it’s a wonder that it hasn’t found itself on more Japan bucket lists yet, but maybe now you’ll add this “must see” hidden gem to yours!
