Economy Class Ferry Rides in Japan are More Luxurious than First Class on an Airline
In this video, we travel from Kyushu Island (from Usuki Port) across the channel to Shikoku Island (to Yawatahama Port). The trip takes about 2.5 hours one way, but its worth it because you can save hours of driving and fuel. Our ride began late at night on New Year’s Day (2021) and took us into a sleepy town of Yawatahama. The ferry was super clean and comfortable. There were vending machines, convenience snack bar, bathrooms, viewing decks, lounging areas to lay down or sit, TVs, and much more. There were only 4 people on board to include ourselves. We basically had the ship to ourselves.
The ferry had several classes to choose from which included economy class (second-class), first class (which includes access to a 6-person private room that is Japanese or Western style), and a deluxe class (which includes access to a 2-person private room). Since we were transporting a car it cost us a little more. The car transport fee ranged by size. We paid 11,550 JPY and an additional 2,350 JPY per person for the economy class. Although it was a little expensive, it was nice to experience what it was like.
The vessel we were on was the Akebono Maru and it was pristine, quite, and extremely comfortable. Be prepared to move quickly once the ship is docked. The crew is not patient so have your things packed and ready to disembark.
