Kagoshima City is a city located in the central part of Kagoshima Prefecture. It is the prefectural capital of Kagoshima Prefecture and is designated as a core city.
It is called “Oriental Naples” because the view of Sakurajima from the city area on the west coast of Kagoshima Bay is similar to the view of Vesuvius volcano from Naples in Italy.
It is one of the major base cities in the Southern Kyushu region and is also the center of politics, economy, culture and transportation.Located in the central western part of Kagoshima prefecture, it has prospered as a castle town of 900,000 stones of the Satsuma domain since ancient times. It is one of the 31 cities that first enforced the city system in Japan on April 1, 1889, and currently has the fourth largest population in Kyushu after Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, and Kumamoto. As of January 2020, it is the second largest core city after Funabashi City (Chiba Prefecture). It is also designated as a tourist city for international conferences.
It was designated as the first core city in 1996 in the Heisei era (by the Cabinet Order of the Local Autonomy Law established by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1996).Motoichi is also the leading city where about one-third (about 35%) of the prefecture’s population is concentrated, and constitutes the Kagoshima metropolitan area with the surrounding local governments.Further development is expected with the full opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen.
