Said to date back to the 7th century, Kamigamo-jinja Shrine is one of the oldest and largest shrines in Kyoto. Along with its sister shrine, Shimogamo-jinja Shrine, the two World Heritage-listed sites are believed to protect Kyoto from evil. ⛩️
Each year on 15 May, visitors can take a step back to ancient Kyoto with the Aoi Matsuri, one of Kyoto’s three main festivals. A procession of over 500 participants dressed in aristocratic Heian Period (794-1185) costumes from the Imperial Palace to both shrines is the highlight and is truly a sight to behold! If you’re lucky, you can catch a glimpse of couples in traditional wedding attire as they make their wedding vows at these temples.
📍 Both shrines in Kyoto’s north are easily accessible by local trains and buses.
